er... we are altering the entire planet's atmosphere relatively cheaply - in fact they tell us we can't afford not to
..so if AGW is a weapon in the hands of the powers that be, who is it being aimed at?
- us perhaps? On Battlefield earth posted 1 year, 10 months ago 3 Responseshow long does CO2 stay in the atmosphere?
"heat-trapping carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for about 100 years."
Co2 stays in the atmosphere as long as it takes a process to take it out - it doesn't leave the atmosphere of its own accord.
Since the main natural mechanisms for CO2 removal are all under threat from global warming (in no particular order: solution in seawater, plankton, forests, etc.), 100 years may be a bit optimistic. After these mechanisms have failed it is down to rocks to absorb the CO2 on time-scales way longer than those that measure human civilisation.Another point: You say that in 2 years the temperature will rise steadily. At what point will it level off?

Dismissing this book with only a cursory look is a bit of a mistake.
I have read it. Its secret message is that cutting carbon by 90% and maintaining our current lifestyle is impossible.

convenience
"common-sense ideas that nonetheless may be inconvenient"
If cutting carbon was easy and convenient, we would have done it already. The path of least resistance is not going to take us where we need to go.
Pursuing comfort and convenience has already contributed to higher emissions.5 years to make a 15% reduction?

So far the issue seems to be centered on reducing emissions. In Branson's favour: he has raised the issue of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Surely at the rate emissions are accelerating this is something worth at least considering? On She's not into it posted 2 years, 9 months ago 10 Responses

come on...
the whole thing isn't worth the paper it's written on - just look at the sheer increase in news volume on climate change since Katrina - it's obvious Americans' attitudes have changed.

overselling? when the effects outrun the models?
It appears that the more scientists find out, the more trouble we appear to be in.
Take the recent revision of forecasts for arctic summer ice
If you continue the trend you'll see that at this rate in two years time scientists will forcast the end of summer ice in the arctic for 2010.
[see graph]Scientists may feel thay have oversold climate change, but at the rate they revise their predictions, I doubt it.On What do the climate scientists think? posted 2 years, 11 months ago 24 Responses
