  • This song, good or bad?

Does the positive effect from this of increasing the awareness of global warming outweigh the negative stereotype reinforcement that ignorance is "cool".  If students of science are downtrodden as being uncool and nerdy, who will fix the problems of civilization?  It doesn't matter how mobilized people are if nobody knows WTF to do.

  • MUCH more study is needed

Even if this has the potential to economically counteract global warming, think about the potential to royally screw up the oceans and thus the entire world.  MUCH more study is needed in order to even possibly consider doing this on a massive scale.  On Could lime absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide? posted 1 year, 4 months ago 15 Responses

  • Silly California

directed city departments to purchase 100 percent recycled paper and reduce overall paper use by 20 percent by 2010

So the state that has been having so much trouble with wildfires, (which emit copious amounts of CO2) wants to decrease the incentive for companies to manage local forests thus increasing the chances of future forest fires?  This seems to be counterproductive if his goal is to decrease CO2 emissions.

I'm certainly not saying paper recycling is bad, just pointing out the irony that California is probably the place that needs it's forests managed (sustainably) the most.On Grist talks to San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom about greening the city posted 1 year, 4 months ago 5 Responses

20 times the tax on CO2 that NEEDS to be implemented will due as methane is a 20 times more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.  Why choose winners when you can tax evenly based on potency and let the market optimize the equation? On In eastern North Carolina, citizens and students rise up for environmental justice posted 1 year, 4 months ago 4 Responses

  • I spent a summer working for Hertz

I worked for Hertz for a summer 2 summers ago as a customer service guy (the ppl who you talk to when you are renting a car).  We very rarely actually had economy sized cars in our inventory and pretty much counted on just being able to put someone in a mid-size or full-size for the same price.  When gas was cheap, nobody complained about getting a nicer car for free.  Now with gas the way it is, I can imagine the fit people must be throwing if they wanted a tiny car and get one of those forced upgrades.  Makes me glad I only did that for a summer:)On Rental-car companies struggling to meet demand for smaller cars posted 1 year, 4 months ago 4 Responses

I have been living in Germany for a couple of months now and the fact that google automatically decides that I want my search results in German is annoying.

If I wanted German results, I would have typed in www.google.de and not www.google.com!

Also if you are a gmail user, google very recently lost the trademark for gmail here (actually they never had it).  I used to always type gmail.google.com

Ford will likely be a loser in this situation given their current (shall we say lacking) lineup of fuel efficient vehicles.  Asian automakers have a huge head start over the big three.

Not that I disagree with taxing gas heavily as long as it is implemented slowly 10 cents/(gallon*year) looks to be reasonable.  Why not just tax all carbon emissions equally though? On The CEO of Ford Motor Co. ... posted 2 years, 3 months ago 6 Responses

  • Interesting perspective on Net Energy

Here is an interesting perspective on using net energy as a metric for a fuel's value.

    http://biopact.com/2007/08/expert-net-energy-useless-misl ...

They challenge net energy on a multitude of platforms.

"For evidence, he points to the markets, where a unit of energy from gas, petrol and electricity are worth 3.5, 5 and 12 times as much as a unit of energy from coal, respectively."

Also net energy does not factor in greenhouse gas emissions (obviously). On Don't let the one color your feelings on the other posted 2 years, 3 months ago 68 Responses
