Green Party Question
The question is, where is the Green Party right now. Al Gore and Barack Obama may support environmental issues, but only the Green Party can frame all of the challenges we face in an environmental context. Third parties challenge the mainstream to consider innovative alternatives and options. Unfortunately, the Green Party isn't doing a good job of participating in this Presidential election.

This isn't a first
I've been covering these EPA fiascoes for a while on my blog. The amount of political influence going on at the EPA right now is unthinkable. The Supreme Court has issued a command to the EPA and the EPA has failed to perform, these states and groups have every right to sue. Good for them!
By the way, I thought it was 18 states who were suing.

The role of the Endangered Species Act
I think its important to point out that sometimes we are limited by the laws that give us our authority.
Unfortunately, the Endangered Species Act is a safety net. Its triggered by an unsustainable level of a particular species. There is no law that gives authority to the Fish and Wildlife Service to step in when long term threats are forecasted but have not yet materialized.
Many people are confused by this. Probably because it seems counterintuitive to wait until a species is threatened or endangered to begin protecting the habitat from negative impacts. But this is the system that is in place.
It is an outdated system that emphasizes specific threats, like deforestation, rather than diffuse threats, like global warming. It measures the success of a species rehabilitation in sheer numbers rather than the overall balance of the ecosystem. Finally, it doesn't sufficiently account for the range of factors that contribute to the shifts in population numbers of a species.
Just thought I'd point that out.

McCain's Environmentalist VP
It makes my heart sink to think that McCain can speak so eloquently about our need for renewable energy sources and to stop greenhouse gas emissions one moment, then go silent on these issues now to court conservatives. How are we ever going to really accomplish anything if these politicians have no courage and no conviction. The only solace is that the two names floating around as possible VP choices by McCain have actually accomplished something on the environment.

Obama's Coal Obsession
Obama represents Illinois in the US Senate. Illinois has a coal and agricultural based economy which means it is concerned about ethanol and coal energy. Obama says he would stand-up to lobbyists and special interests, but time and time again he has supported coal and ethanol producers rather than clean, renewable energy sources. Doesn't this make him the enemy of the environmental community?
I did a blog entry about Obama's love for coal here...

This is exactly right. The environmental community needs to get serious about making Senator Obama accountable for his past votes on things like Dick Cheney's 2005 Energy bill that was written behind closed doors by lobbyists and did more damage to environmental progress than any recent piece environmental legislation. He might be a Democrat, but if he doesn't stand-up for the environment when it counts, he might as well be a Republican. Email Obama and tell him that every vote counts when it comes to environmental reform.

A No-Buy Valentines
It is actually greener to avoid consuming more products this year for Valentines Day. Everything we purchase is manufactured, packaged, and shipped, which means that it has an impact on the environment.
The greenest thing you can do for your lover is cut back on the purchasing and put a little thought into your gift.
Here are my tips...

I love Grist's information on the candidates and their environmental policy. I have used this information in my own blog. In addition, I have lots of stuff on both the rhetoric and records of the different candidates including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Stuck in a Rut!
Kevin,
I graduated from law school less than a year ago. In school I studied environmental policy, which meant that my daunting coursework included classes like ecosystems management, natural resources law, an endangered species act seminar, land use law, environmental law, etc.
We studied some of the most cutting edge issues in environmental law and I became extremely passionate about these issues. Following up on that passion, I took a clerk position with the environmental area of the Florida administrative hearings court. I started a blog that emphasized incorporating simple green pieces into daily life. I also donated to several environmental organizations.
I took all of these experiences and my education and moved to Washington, DC hoping to start a career in environmental policy. I have a background in communications and I would have been happy to blend the environmental law and communications fields. Unfortunately, despite my connections and hundreds of resume submissions, I was unable to secure a job here working with the environmental community. Instead, I took a position with a health organization where I thought I could expand my experience in non-profits and with Congressional relations.
A few months have passed and the environmental fever hasn't faded. I still desperately want to find work in environmental policy. I have made a one year plan starting with the beginning of 2008 to get involved in at least 2 local environmental organizations as a member/volunteer so I can at least start networking and meeting my fellow treehuggers. I've also made a resolution to submit writings on the environment to various industry papers, hoping for some type of publication.
While doing this, I plan on keeping an eye out for the types of jobs I'm interested in so I can start applying around October.
In an environment like DC, where there are so many green-types, how can I get noticed? Is there something above what I'm currently doing that would increase my chances of finding the job I want? Any help would be most appreciated. On Green job planning for 2008 posted 1 year, 10 months ago 13 Responses

The Perpetual Oil Victimization
One of the ways Oil corporations convince Americans that oil is the best energy source available is by insisting that current technologies guarantee the safest, cleanest, and most secure means for drilling and transporting oil. The public relations machine run by oil companies is so smooth, it has been successful at staving off government investment in renewable energy technologies, auto industry investment in more efficient automobiles, and attempts to block drilling in America's most serene natural habitats. Again and again we are all duped by this enormously powerful industry that acts as the perpetual victim while reaping the world's largest revenues in history.
