  • Finally! Keep it coming.

Does anyone here care that we have gone 30-years without building a new refinery? It is impossible to continue growing as nation without a proportional increase in our resources. Just because YOU don't drive, doesn't mean your neighbor, grandmother, or I shouldn't have access to motor fuels. Artificially increasing the price of diesel/gasoline by obstructing the construction of new refineries is tantamount to thuggery and intimidation.

Refining capacity is a major factor in the retail price of gasoline. Intentionally suffocating this industry is criminal.

You should also consider that if this gasoline is not produced in South Dakota, it will be produced elsewhere. Do you think granola heads will be suing refiners in Venezuela, Mexico, or any other emerging economy? No. Keep your mouth shut as the net pollution/embodied energy & resources consumption will be as low as economically possible. • How will bike riders contribute?

I think bike lanes are wonderful. What is the best way to collect money from bike riders for their construction and maintenance? Portland, OR currently steals money from gasoline taxes paid entirely by motorists. F- that. On How to green your commute posted 1 year, 6 months ago 20 Responses

  • Obama lacks substance.

Obama is the definition of an empty suit but I liked his candor in that situation. He is good looking, likable, and charming but I think his convictions drop off sharply.

Anyone who thinks the government is capable of running a universal health care system lacks true intelligence. Get a clue people.

  • A couple of questions...

Why are beggars allowed to be choosers in this or any case? Why is anyone listening to Africa about anything? I don't think we or anyone who eats three meals a day should accept agricultural advice from any African nation.

Take the 'GM' food and shut up. Better yet, redirect every dollar currently funding domestic food aid and ship it to any nation that APPRECIATES it. If you live in this country and cannot feed yourself or your family you are worthless and should go hungry.

I wish our cowardly politicians would just do what makes sense. Instead they burden hard working people with the problems of those who do not work or make poor decisions in life, i.e. Food Stamps, Medicaid, Universal Healthcare, subsidized housing, etc.

  • San Francisco -> Hobo Heaven

This has to be one of my least favorite cities. I would guess 1 in 5 residents is homeless. Perhaps Mayor Newsom can mandate all city vehicles run on hobo urine. Its a good thing they legislate the prohibition of plastic sacks. • Critical Mass Sucks

If bicycle advocates want to achieve what is best for cyclists they should actively discourage Critical Mass events. Like the reasonable person above (NBKBoston)writes, bicycles have a very defined limit for their saturation and practicality.

Rounding up a bunch of burnouts with nappy dreads to slowly ride through a city is highly counter productive. Why? Aside from the participants, the only people who benefit/enjoy these events are the cops who cash overtime checks from having to monitor these events.

If you honestly look at the impact of Critical Mass you will find deleterious effects. I live in Portland and was formerly enthusiastic about everything green and sustainable. I say formerly because I have had a change of heart. Critical Mass-like events do not motivate politicians like the proponent wrote above, they alienate normal people like myself who don't want this stuff crammed down their throats. Riding through my neighborhood like a bunch of clowns does not add credence to the 95% of bicycle commuters who are normal, tax paying citizens.

Seriously, CM just adds to traffic congestion (air pollution+CO2), delays mass transit commuters, and perhaps worst of all, alienates potential environmentalists who want to do the right thing.

Today, I am much more in alignment with those who say bikes should be registered so they contribute financially to all the special infrastructure they require. Thanks Critical Mass!

The war in Iraq is not an optional or discretionary cost as you are characterizing it. To say that we chose to fight a war, spend billions of dollars, and lose thousands of American lives when we could have directed the effort at carbon compliance is not true.

You would rather walk out of the mall and be carbon compliant that live in a country sponsoring the war in Iraq. What you fail to realize is that you are walking out of the mall without fear of becoming a pink mist in a terrorist plot, i.e. Israel, Bali, Spain, Beslan. Like Bush or not, we have not had a terrorist attack in this country since 9-11.

Do you try to intimidate everyone who has a different point of view? On Federal officials suggest killing sea lions to protect salmon posted 1 year, 10 months ago 40 Responses

  • Just Relax

I am not suggesting we kill ALL sea lions, only those cherry picking salmon beneath dams.

I think the guys who write South Park hit it on the head when your typical Grist blogger is akin to the people of South Park who own a Toyota Prius and intentionally inhale their own farts. I on the other hand do not fly off the handle when someone suggests something as simple as killing a few sea lions to save thousands of salmon, yes thousands of salmon. Are sea lions endangered? Of course not. Are wild salmon? Yes.

If everyone in this country did what I do, limit driving, maintain an efficient/new auto, voluntarily pay more for renewable energy, take short showers, recycle only recoverable plastics, alum., and paper, etc this country would be a green paradise.

Eat salmon, its good for your heart and will delay that stroke you will have if you continue to overreact about these issues. On Federal officials suggest killing sea lions to protect salmon posted 1 year, 10 months ago 40 Responses

  • I see no problem with this.

150 seal lions? Big deal. They are a menace to salmon and any reasonable person should have no problem identifying the most important species in this case. Of course dams are the biggest threat to salmon populations but we are a modern society that has to except some level of animal/habitat kill to facilitate our modern way of life.
Salmon provide an invaluable commercial service to Native Americans in Oregon and Washington as well as providing hundreds of thousands of people the pleasure of eating such a delicious and healthy animal.

Eradicating sea lions within a reasonable distance from these dams is a very common sense solution to saving such an important animal. If this plan isn't approved by the Fisheries and Wildlife organizations, hopefully some well meaning fisherman will do it themselves, a la The Boondock Saints. Amazing-

I think Al Gore and his crusade to educate and mitigate the damages of global warming are noble and well intentioned. Additionally, I was not defending George Bush and his environmental record or lack thereof.

More to the point, I was attacking the premise of this very discussion. The collective habits of the 1 or 2 billion people not living in caves are the biggest concern for our planet.

Just because I don't believe its right to take pot shots at a single person for the actions/consumption of a few billion people, well I guess I must be Bush defending, Limbaugh listening zealot. You are wrong, keep blaming everyone but yourself it makes you feel better.

Lastly, Amazing, if you are reading this you just validated my point. Honestly think about the embodied energy of all YOUR daily activities.

  • Look in the Mirror

Typical attitudes on this forum. Blame Bush, blah, blah, no blood for oil, blah... George Bush just signed increased CAFE standards for the first time in some 30 years. Look in the mirror for the worst ecological offenders. George Bush does not drive your car, eat your beef/pork/chicken, keep the thermostat in your house pegged at 70F in the winter   and summer. Nobody intentionally scars the environment. However, people like George Bush do take the initiative to provide the energy and services the free market demands. Anyone writing on this forum is modern enough to be using a computer and validating the horrific degradation of our earth through mining, petrochemicals (i.e. plastic), and  coal fired power to allow that little screen to glow.

My recommendations to everyone on the forum.

    1. Make a good faith effort to conserve.
    2. Find a hobby not linked to environmental concerns.
    3. Enjoy your life and stop blaming others for the problems you directly precipitate

  • Build it bigger, higher, longer, faster! NOW!

This country needs a fence, a giant one. If we redirected the money spent incarcerating, feeding, medicating, educating (en espanol!) these people we would have an impenetrable fence with comprehensive monitoring by immigration and border patrol agents. I for one am not afraid of a US w/o cheap labor. If the price of peaches goes up $0.45/lb, it will not make a big deal in my life. Saying a fence is futile is like saying that is pointless to bail the water out of a  sinking boat. The alternative is to simply sink faster. Criminalize these people, they are breaking the law and destroying a great nation. At the very least do not subsidize their living expenses.    On Why environmental groups have been slow to fight the border wall posted 2 years, 1 month ago 38 Responses
