  • ..reduce the cost of..transporting coal

Coincidentally enough, 13 coal cars on a CSX train derailed in Bowie, Maryland last night, not far from DC.  With the rains we are expecting in a couple of hours, this could turn into a real mess. I was surprised to hear the local news treating it as the potential environmental problem that it is, using words like toxic, pollutant, chemical compounds and heavy metals.  On Congressional leaders call for capitol plant to can coal days before big protest posted 9 months ago 4 Responses

  • Um, what about the stove?

Popcorn has become like coffee - it's the simplest thing in the world to make, but we are becoming trained to believe that it's just too hard.  You can always make popcorn on your stove, in any pot with a lid, just a little oil and whatever popcorn you like.  No microwave, special containers, popper, etc.  And of course, nothing has a butterier flavor than butter. On Why conventional popcorn sucks, and what you can do about it posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago 20 Responses

As a condition to any bailout, the feds should make them reimburse any legal costs that were incurred in any Big 3-inspired lawsuits related to CAFE or the Clean Air Act (to include reimbursing the state governments).  Assuming, of course, that the automakers are ever profitable enough to pay back the Treasury for the amount of the bailout. On Big Three auto execs pledge to become greener, more profitable posted 11 months, 4 weeks ago 4 Responses

... if this was ever going to get picked up.  I thought the "blah, blah, blah" was incredibly flippant, not just from an environmental point of view, but from a public safety perspective.  Is it now considered extremist to want a nuclear power plant to be safe?  I hope this is getting some traction in communities all around nuclear power plants. • Meanwhile, not far from Nationals Park...

On I-395 right by the Capitol, there is a huge billboard touting the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, Green Car Journal's "Vehicle of the Year".  Before that the same space was a General Motors billboard touting E85 / Flexfuel that read "Don't drill for fuel.  Grow it."  The whole Washington area is a magnet for that kind of lobbying, it's sad to see that the new ballpark is being sucked into that in a big way.On Protestors object to a green baseball stadium sponsored by the world's dirtiest corporation posted 1 year, 5 months ago 3 Responses

  • Heard it, too.

I was wondering about the name connection.  Two important points he brought out - waste heat could generate up to 20% of our electricity.  And the biggest obstacle is state and federal laws desgined to protect monopoly utilities.  "Even the Clean Air Act prevents utilities themselves from recycling waste heat at older coal-fired power plants, because any modification subjects them to newer regulations."  Seems like a no-brainer.On Castens implement Phase II of global domination plan posted 1 year, 6 months ago 2 Responses

We stopped buying paper towels about five years ago, and have not noticed a difference in our lives.  We use cloth rags to dust, microfiber towels to do some other tasks, dishtowels to wipe up spills and newspaper to wash windows.  Seriously, try cleaning your windows with white vinegar and newpaper - works great!  Paper towels, unlike toilet paper, are just not necessary! On Putting a bounty of paper towels to the test posted 1 year, 7 months ago 6 Responses

  • Who is the enemy?

I was thinking about this subject in preparation for the inevitable discussion with a far-right leaning co-worker of mine.  Fidel Castro is not my enemy, despite what this and previous administrations have said.  Given a choice, I doubt he'd want any harm to befall me.  Using that as a definition, our enemies are those (for example) who would slaughter and process downer cows and willingly allow that meat to get into the food supply.  How about a brave, macho statement on that, Mr President? On ... and Bush talks big posted 1 year, 9 months ago 7 Responses

That reminds me of a trip I took along the Gulf Coast about 15 years ago.  I stopped in Biloxi, and the hotel had these little "wet-wipe" towellettes in the bathroom.  When I opened one, it smelled like gasoline.  Turns out they were to be used after a walk on the beach to get all of the tar / crude oil blobs off of your feet.  I decided against swimming. On ... for real posted 2 years, 3 months ago 4 Responses
