Why stop a military bases?  The Mall in Washington is just one big open area begging for exploitation.  In fact, let's add refineries and storage units to all excess space on national monument grounds.

The real missing story here is that putting refineries on former military bases is a neat way to avoid super-funding those sites.  Way to think outside the septic tank, RNC!On The military base loophole? posted 4 years, 7 months ago 4 Responses

The gross and unsubstantiated generalizations in Goldberg's writing might help philistine conservatives sleep at night, but would have merited a failing grade in freshmen English courses.  With shills like this boob promoting flawed reasoning, one has to wonder if framing will do anything to improve the situation.

How do you penetrate a fortress mind that is bulwarked with tripe from Fox "News" and the National Review?

  • Where is Friedman living?

Is this meant as a state initiative or is the point to frame a new set of arguments that can be ignored by the one-party federal government we have now?

On the federal level, the way I see it:

Chances of any (pro) environmental legistlation in the next 3 years: low

Chances of legislation to force Detroit to change fueld economy: very low

Chances of legislation to increase gas tax to promote alternative transportation: LOL

  • good analogy

At first I thought that, as analogies go, this came up a bit short if the intent was to show the effect of environmental movement messages.  After thinking about it, it's actually dead-on.

Consider today's news where Bush came out yet again in favor of re-introducing the Anwar oil development bill (evidently the neocons think it will work this time; it really feels like we've been stuck in a 3-card monte game for a few years).  Yes, I will contribute and email and phone to try to prevent this, but deep down, I might as well be using my voice to yell "STOP" to a super eruption.

Before the internet, didn't we suceed more by doing rather than by carping?  United we stand if we are standing united, and on the internet we're just a bunch of anonymous dogs howling at the moon.  It's time to show our conviction and strength of numbers in a environmental protest march on Washington.  On PS: We're all going to die posted 4 years, 8 months ago 4 Responses

  • forcing the issue?

Given that the EU has agreed to ratify Kyoto, can that government help push the US that way by forcing compliance for any countries that wish to trade goods or do business with EU nations?

  • Reality re-check

Yes, and extending that line of argument, you must realize that unless you have a solar panel or wind turbine next to your house, you're probably polluting the planet by using a computer to read this.

BTW, on cars vs. minivans: you're saying that I should stuff my irresponsibly-oversized family into a sedan that gets 25MPG instead of a roomy minivan that gets 25MPG.  Hopefully those numbers improve with hybrids.

My original point is that if you frame the dialog with invectives on families, you lose.

If you want to know why environmentalism is dying look no further than the previous response.  Much as I'd love to live in a utopian society where every drives a prius, its a bit cramped if you have more than the 1.7 kids that Orwell's government would allow.  On New Ford hybrid SUV posted 4 years, 9 months ago 6 Responses

And in a related story, the Super Hogfarm Ecoli Emission (SUHEE) Association is seeking oraginic certification for their massive quantities of pig waste since, as they contend, the waste is all derived from natural sources.  Top SUHEE scientists working closely with the EPA declare that excess waste can be used to shore up dams in the northwest that are being menaced by steelhead salmon.  The Bush Administration is considering the proposal.

  • Sounds a bit nebulous

How is 'finding a narrative' orthogonal to pleading the case for the environment?  Since when are environmental issues relegated to special interest groups?

Sure, it sounds like Democrats have gotten religion on the subject of moral issues, and that may well lead them into to playing moral catch-up with the Republicans (personally I find this reasoning to be as knee-jerk as fixing a flawed voting system by replacing punch cards with untested, unauditable, and unsecured electronic voting boxes).

Do we really have to fire up ministers in red states about the morality of environmental causes to get the case heard?  Sounds more like mullahs than ministers.

After only 10 days of digesting the defeat I'm not sure what the proper response should be, but moving the party to the right or a knee jerk 'do what they did' prinicple simply makes the Republican side stronger. On Vision trouble posted 5 years ago 5 Responses
