  • cap and trade or carbon tax

I hope that we can take a cue from the EU on cap-and-trade, or else impose a carbon tax.  I think the creation of another market is going to appeal to the right more than a tax, simply because it is called a tax.  If the GOP wins the US election this year we're in for a rough ride.  Remember:  Every time you vote Republican, God kills a kitten.

I had a horrible thought today.  What if all the global warming information, coupled with the declining US dollar and inflation, are being used solely to rip us away from dependence on foreign oil, and to drive the US straight into the arms of coal producers?

The prospect of oil in the previously unreachable areas of the North Pole has sabres rattling in a number of nations...which means there is no intention of turning away from fossil fuels by the powers-that-be. And, unfortunately, the coal folks have more money than the good guys.

I don't know where it goes when I press "submit" but I signed a petition regarding this at the Conservation International website.  If it makes you feel better you can add your name to one of their petitions stopping the "clock" on extinction.  As I get older I get more idealistic.  I've seen too many GOOD things happen.  Hey we stopped acid rain and no one thought we could.  And the EPA just got trounced again.  Whohoo. I feel your anger, Eric.  When I told Nini and Aïda about this they both ran to the sink and began wiping their tongues with environmentally unfriendly Kleenex(TM).  Then they looked at me accusingly.  I'm thinking of a log cabin in the woods, with tree-stump furniture and cotton batting for a bed, but I'm worried about termites.

  • Well I liked it

I really think that one has to consider whether a candidate (1) wants to go in a certain direction, (2) if they WILL go in that direction and (3) if they have the machine behind them to do so.  Hillary Clinton is a many-time participant in the Bilderberg group meetings, she has a tremendous amount of power behind her -- and I do believe she is in favor of cleaning things up.  She is incredibly bright and yes, she does "get" what is going on.  Sequestration is at this time not doable.  I'm sure she is aware of this but is treading carefully.  One does not bang a drum before hunting a tiger (oil and coal industries).  Biodiesel is a band-aid approach.  Worse, it threatens deforestation and food supplies. On An interview with Hillary Clinton about her presidential platform on energy and the environment posted 2 years, 3 months ago 32 Responses

  • Bob Murray et al

I recall a previous entry regarding Murray Energy, it was quite colorful and I watched the current goings on with great interest.  The man has an ego greater than any I have seen, bar none. The aforementioned piece was by David Roberts... <http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/6/28/124240/244#2> and I read it with great amusement.  The bigger they are....and this is not written without real upset over the coal miners who are stuck or dead in that mountain.  On With Safety Like This, Who Needs Danger? posted 2 years, 3 months ago 1 Response

Is the US in an unspoken tariff war with China or something?  Sorry, I don't get out much.  But it just seems odd that all of a sudden the US is realizing all these Chinese products are harmful or substandard in some way.  I mean, let's be real:  they've been sending lead paint in toys, antifreeze in toothpaste and poison in their fish over here for decades, haven't they?  We'd all be blissfully unaware if there weren't such a ginormous trade deficit, right?

I find it interesting, and a little bit too coincidental that this should happen at a time when nations are collectively reconsidering nuclear power as a viable alternative to coal-fired and other "dirty" energy sources.  I may have to rethink my agnosticism.  Is this a Billboard?  Do we have a source that can tell us exactly how much risk/damage was sustained by the leak from the plant?

  • it was the flooding thing that got me

When I read the report, esp on my home state, it was the projected flooding that got to me.  And my dad is out in Suffolk County Long Island.  The water's high enough already out there.  Flooding brings additional pollution problems with it especially in the industrialized, low-lying northeast.  Northern NJ has a very high water table already.  The next 20 years are going to be messy.  And unlike stevenearlsalmony, I don't think humans are all that special in the great scheme of things.

  • Unhappy Cows

You know, I can never be sure if the animal meat I am eating/milk I am drinking came from a supersized farm where animals are treated as objects...or if it came from a mom-and-pop farm and the animal led a relatively good life.  After seeing footage about how animals are treated in large slaughterhouses I decided I just was not going to support that industry any longer.  I also suspect that there is a lot of steroid use in food animals in the US, which might explain why Americans on the whole are so morbidly obese. Pork and Beef are horrible for your colon health.  I have to admit the occasional chicken-slip ;-)

I was actually heartened to see that China is building nukes on a grand scale...along with chasing down just about every renewable source of energy they can find.  Of course regional goverments are building illegal coal-fired plants as fast as the central government can shut them down, just to keep the lights on.  Too bad energy is in the hannds of the private sector in the US country.  And it's not going to change any time soon.
