Just for anyone else who wanted to put this in perspective, Wikipedia says that the US economy "was estimated as $13.8 trillion in 2007".

In other words, this $900 billion is about 6% of the total economy (same as the economic bailout package), and between 1/3 and 1/2 of the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sounds like a good idea to me...

    Great story.

Although AP isn't heavily associated directly with advertising (a la Chomsky's Propaganda Model from "Manufacturing Consent"), it must be to some extent: the papers that run AP stories would surely only run the stories from AP that suit it's advertising market, and depending on the buying model, that would potentially have the effect of making AP only write stories that it's buyer's advertisers would like. Hard to prove, because of the degrees of separation, and the number of news outlets that source material from AP.

Obama's not calling for anything that falls outside the realms of acceptability in the US. He's not restricting corporations from fucking up the planet, or keeping people in the slave-wage system in the US and the third world. His health care policies seem much more progressive than most recent presidents, but they are far worse than nearly every other developed country, and a lot of developing countries.

That is, increasing ice mass in one area of the globe proves and disproves nothing about the global climate, especially while evidence from elsewhere (ie. everywhere with ice) means that the general trend of global ice levels are downwards.

You what?? Hybrids are a primary solution to peak oil?? what are you on? I don't even think efficiency is a primary solution to peak oil. Have you heard of Jevons' paradox?

The real solutions aren't going to be technologic. If anything they're going to be a simplification of current technologies, and localisation of everything. We can increase energy efficiency all we like, but all we're doing is treating the symptom. It'll just make the crash that much harder.

  • What?!

So I did the measurements and found 140 gallons per minute, which is about enough for the purpose, but less than a 20 foot drop in elevation, which is the killer.

My friends in the Hunter valley (australia) have a 30L/min flow through their hydro setup (the creek flows much more than that), and only a two metre drop. When it's working, and combined with two 60W solar panels, they produce pretty much all the electricity they need (I think it's about 100W constantly, plus the PV). They don't use much - just lighting, a computer, and a small fridge really, but it's enough for them.

You have the maximum potential for a system 50 times what they have (assuming you use all the water, which I definitely don't think is a good idea)...

  • on travel

justlou: does travel fall into the category of consumption?
yep. At least the kind of travel you're talking about is.

I'd like to point out that it's quite possible to spend decades in one place, and still not discover everything that's within walking distance. And the biodiversity in your local ecosystems (assuming they're not completely destroyed) is more complex than anything you'll ever learn from travelling for a short period to any other ecosystem.

The fundamental answer to this question is another question: why travel? If the answer is to learn, then I don't agree that travelling is the best way to learn (moving somewhere else for an extended period may be?), for the above reasons. There are also plenty of non-travelling methods of learning.

If it's escapism, then it's also not a valid reason to fuck the planet. there are plenty of other methods of escapism (reading, gardening, hobbies, what ever) that are just as valid, an much less destructive, or even creative.

If it's to help people (Aid work, etc), then there may be some value in that, but you've gotta ask yourself if the people you're helping wouldn't be better off if your country's government wasn't constantly screwing them over, and wouldn't it be better to fight the problem at the source?

Are there any other reasons to travel? I may have missed one or two (business doesn't count for me - use a phone)...
