  • Sarah Palin

I will vote democratic this time as usual, but the democratic candidate is not even a liberal let alone a progressive(Bush is so far to the right, he makes moderates look liberal).

Sarah Palin is obviously not ready to be president.
That is not to say without more experience, preparation and study, she cannot be in the future.

I think she was probably as surprised when McCain picked her as the public was.

Campaigning began immediately and she has had no time to study the campaign issues in any detail.

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I don't think she is lying in many cases, she just doesn't know.
It is simple ignorance (which could be remedied if there were time). Sometimes, being able to say you don't know but will find out can save you lots of grief.

This doesn't mean I particularly like her but I do believe the Republicans have given her a "script" to play from .....

  • Credibility

The govt lost its credibility in the 60's.

Around a decade ago, drug companies "volunteered" to pay processing fees to the FDA (rather than use tax money).

They themselves introduced and guided the bill thru Congress (you know those sycophantic whores).

Those in the know, including pharmacists opposed the bill as they knew the FDA would become dependent on drug company money like an addict on oxycontin.

Shoddy trials and advisory committees filled with numerous "professionals" receiving money from drug companies followed.

Then Vioxx and numerous drugs that had to be withdrawn because they were killing people.

(Never mind Bush and the Iraq war, etc) ...... how many times do you have to be lied to by someone before you cease to believe them?   On Common chemical in food containers not a health threat, says FDA posted 1 year, 3 months ago 8 Responses

  • Nothing New For Oil Companies

Every season of the year when travel becomes highest, they boost the prices, even when the cost of oil has not increased.

If a hurricane even goes near the gulf, that's an excuse for higher gas prices ...... or there's a leak in a pipe, etc.

The problem is lack of competition ....

20 years ago, the FTC disallowed both vertical and horizontal mergers to maintain the maximum number of suppliers and thus increased competition.

The emasculation of the FTC by the congress under the direction of their corporation masters has led to the creation of oligopolies in every major industry in this country.

Ex ...... back in the late 80's, there were 8 to 10 major drug companies ........ now there are 3 .........

Oligopolies don't compete ....... it is not in their interests to do so ......they "sit around a table" and set prices.....

The govt failure to represent the best interests of the people got us where we are .....

The FTC is now a worthless regulatory agency ...... like most other regulatory agencies which have been stripped of their powers and funding by "pro-business" republicans ....

They can't even effectively regulate the deceiving advertisements that you see on tv, let alone in print media and on the internet.

Their is no doubt the american people must change their lifestyles and addictions ....

But that really is a separate issue from what is occuring now with the oil companies ....... i.e., they are indeed taking advantage of the situation while pointing their fingers at the sheiks ....

If they were simply passing along increased costs, their profits would not be soaring ...... they are adding their own price hikes to the oil in addition to the hikes coming from the oil supplying countries for crude.

Being associated with wind and solar might be to their long-term advantage and closer to their values than coal .....

Sounds like they have the same problem as the rest of the country does with the US govt.

People should refuse to vote in elections. A 30% or less turnout is a defacto expression of "no confidence" and the govt so elected has no mandate to do anything.

The american people are too stupid to do this and perhaps the natives on their reservation also lack the ability to see this approach.

Then there is the "vote to the lesser of the evils" approach but there comes a time when the "lesser" is just too evil to vote for ....

  • This Shows The Need To Pass Legislation To Prevent

    Appointments by the President.

Appointments by the President should be totally disallowed by legislation to the judicial, legislative or to public regulatory agencies.

Ipso facto, appointments to the Judicial or Legislative branch directly undermines the balance of power desired by the founding fathers.

This means appointments to either the enforcement or trial portions of the judicial branch. The President, no matter what party he is from should not be allowed to select the Attorney General of the US .......state attorney generals should not be political appointees ..... and of course the Supreme Court nominees should not come from the President.

High level judges should be selected by a committee of their peers (national lawyers organization) with representatives of the public on the committee. Congressional approval, though I do not like the idea would be okay for the Supreme Court.

Regulatory agencies should be totally immune from Presidential imput with oversight from Congress.

Bush appointed key members to US Fish and Game, FDA, etc and we have seen the results.

No President should have this power ..... no matter what party they represent.

The fact that the 3 front running clowns could actually be presidential candidates shows how far we have fallen ...... Nero fiddles while Rome burns.

The American people should refuse to participate in the farce presented to them by not voting.

No govt can claim a mandate if less than 50% of the people vote and even lower percentages would expose the failure that the two party system has become.

Apart from such a maneuver, only the actions of 1776 will undo the present America of 1984. On McCain gets a zero from League of Conservation Voters; Obama and Clinton score better posted 1 year, 9 months ago 5 Responses

  • My Opinion

We'll destroy ourselves before we get off the planet.

Crowding leads to more aggression and fighting over resources.

Jefferson was right, living in the country promotes sanity and city life promotes mental illness and perverseness (specifically myopia - a loss of view of the big view and the realities of the connectedness of things - how many city dwellers now could survive without a supermarket nearby?)

Your "rights" exist only so far as they do not fringe upon my "rights". I feel I have a right to live in a natural environment that is not crowded and polluted.

The "right to breed" no longer exist in the present world.
Babies should be sterilized at birth. Eggs and sperm could be harvested later if judged appropriate.

Tax policies in industrialized nations could be used to control birth rates.

We have a cerebral cortex that allows us to overide the reptilean part of the brain of instincts ...... but you have to use it.

I think the fact that some do not is itself an argument for a type of eugenics in today's world.

The developed countries cannot sustain the overflow from 3rd world countries where apparently they only work, sleep and screw and think having babies proves you're a monkey (sorry, I meant "man").

The 1917 influenza virus that had a 50% kill rate was recently harvested from frozen corpses in Alaska by the US govt and has been recreated.
You really don't think they did this for research purposes do you?

The rich will not hesitate to "thin-out" the species when the numbers become a threat to them.

Or nature herself will probably "kick-back" with its own "leveler" in the form of some superbug.

Its too bad that the human race has failed its evolutionary tests for rationality ..... we will eventually be eliminated and perhaps in a few hundred million years a rational species will evolve.

No one wants to talk about overpopulation .... a problem we've known about since its discussion in the 60's.

The "right to breed" is now as arcane and unsupportable as the "right" to dump chemical waste from your factory into the nearest river.

So far, only China has the guts to do what obviously has to be done by every country ...... control their population ....

As the number of people increases, the consumptive level at which they must live must decrease if the environment is not to be destroyed.

Can you imagine the consequences if everyone in the world was presently consuming at the same level as america?

  • No One Can Predict The future

I certainly have nothing against technology per se.

When reason is employed to consider risk/benefit, proper arguments can take place in the public/scientific forums.

I certainly believe in using technology to save lives but am not totally persuaded to using technology to solve problems created by other technologies due to human weakness ..... ie, selfishness, greed, desire for riches and power, etc, etc.

Therefore, the wild card of human weaknesses prevent this from being a simple discussion of the scientific merits of a given technology.

The warmongers will use the technology to create weapons ...... and there is little we can do about it unfortunately.

Our species is irrational and is full of members who are insane.

Science has and can be corrupted by big money.

Risk/benefit ensures a reasonable use of the technology but there are those who will care less about risk/benefit than stuffing their pockets with money and they don't care about exposing others to risks or even known harm in the process (witness industrial pollution dumping in this country).

This leaves us with the unfortunate statement, that in a country which bows to the dollar, if a technology can be corrupted and misused, it will be, despite the fact that there are concurrent  rational uses of that technology.    On Synthetic DNA could soon yield entirely new life forms posted 1 year, 11 months ago 4 Responses

They are "plants" financed by the corporations. By supporting willing candidates from both parties, they are hedging their bets and the people are betrayed.
The interests of the corporations at this time, when corporations see themselves not as americans but as international businesses, are de facto counter to the interests of american workers.
You can recognize these democratic plants by the large amount of funds they receive by the mega corporations.
