Comments Benny Big Eye has made
Marc couldn't have done it without Roger Pielke Jr
Roger Pielke Jr. has a post up trying to "splain himself and his policies.
Here goes....
RPJr: they cannot engage me on the substance, and instead resort to the strategy of "attack the man," probably indicates that they feel that they cannot win an argument on the substance of the matter.
Pot/Kettle/Black. Are you being serious?
RPJr: I was once invited to write a paper for publication in the Cato Institute's journal Regulation.
How much money did the Exxon Mobil funded Cato pay you for your thoughts on climate change?
RPJr: I have testified before Congress at the request of both Democrats and Republicans. Whenever I am invited to testify I recognize full well that the invitation is offered because there is some expectation that my views are somehow politically useful to the party doing the inviting. This is of course how politics in the U.S. Congress actually works, and it goes for every witness ever invited, including scientists and other academics. Thus, I take care in my prepared remarks to clearly spell out my views and their policy implications, based on my expertise and experience. I have never been told what to say, nor has my testimony ever been critiqued or edited beforehand by staff. When I testify you can be sure that my views are my views.
Basically an admission that you were compliant with Republicans using you to undermine a hearing on the Bush Administration's politicization of science in the corporate interest. Good for you!
And so we can all be clear. It is common Hill practice that all written testimony is first approved by the committee. Whether that resulted in you making any changes or not to make the Republicans happy is unknown. We'll take your word on it.
RPJr: People who argue that I have claimed to be an "honest broker" are not telling the truth...
This is true! But you insinuate it nonetheless with your pattern of haranguing other scientists such as Naomi Oreskes, Evan Mills, Michael Mann, Gavin Schmidt,Jim Hansen...etc...etc...
RPJr: My policy is that anyone who is written about here on this blog has an open invitation to respond, and we will publish their response unedited as a main line entry.
First bait them, then offer a chance for defense on your home territory. Brilliant.
RPJr: Do recognize that discussing people's actions or words is not an "attack" even if that discussion is critical at times.
Unless the focus of the discussion is the actions or words or Roger Pielke Jr. In that case, it's personal and ad hominem.
RPJr: if you ever notice something that you think is inappropriate, just let me know and we'll deal with it.
Please print out this comment. Put it in your wallet. Pull it our every ten minutes. Read closely. Repeat for the next thirty days.
And please put to rest your the Royal We nonsense.

Okay, so now the guy is an expert on the economics of international travel.

A professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado, Roger Pielke Jr., said calls to reduce international tourism will impact local economies long before global warming. "The effects they will have, to the extent people follow them, will be more immediate and much larger on tourist destinations than will the effects of climate change, which will take place over decades or more," the professor said. "Until someone invents an airplane that runs on non-greenhouse gas-polluting fuel, it really is an intractable part of the problem. Why not do the easier things first?"

I think it's wonderful that Dessler and Roberts tried to sort it all out, but I think you're both more than a little naive and definitely lacking Beltway sophistication.
Groups like the AEI claim to be think tanks, but they have a very aggressive agenda. Brookings may be seen as a little to the left, but to compare the two is like saying CNN and MSNBC are liberal, while Fox is conservative.
So let's call it a wash.
In the words of William Greider, groups like AEI function as "deep lobbyists"--groups that are not specifically lobbyists in the ways that people might expect, but who are part of the crowd trying to set a legislative agenda. And they have been far too ideological in their approach.
What makes this whole episode so disappointing is that the only newspaper to point this out is all the way across the Atlantic. What's going on with the American media? Why have the lost their courage? On How a conservative think tank's foray into climate policy stirred up a media hornet's nest posted 2 years, 9 months ago 25 Responses
Two quick points
Andrew, first there has been a couple of papes looking at whether we might plant aerosols in the upper parts of the atmosphere as a means to offset the heat trapping aspects of CO2. This would involve putting those aerosols high enough so as to not become health pollutants. My concern about this is whether reflecting sunlight might create problems for photosynthetic organisms.
Second, you gotta love the victimology of current skeptics. From the Weekly Standard: "The rollout of the IPCC report and the Guardian story attacking us coincide with the climax of what can be aptly described as a climate inquisition intended to stifle debate about climate science and policy. Anyone who does not sign up 100 percent behind the catastrophic scenario is deemed a "climate change denier."

Well, a quick peek into the Legacy Tobacco Documents and you find Fred Smith of CEI sending a letter to Tom Borelli asking for more tobacco money.

In the letter, Smith dang...

How about seeing if Pielke Jr. will provide an invitation to moderate this latest scuffle, like he did during the Hockey Stick debate?

From the WSJ story: "Now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is moving to ramp up debates on energy and how to curb so-called greenhouse gases, which most scientists believe are accelerating global warming..."
What is meant by "so-called greenhouse gases"? Does this imply that they don't exist?
And WTF with "most scientists believe", as if there is this huge debate that is not based on science but on "beliefs"?

So if Young got it so wrong, as Mooney and Kleiman point out, then why is Pielke over on his blog wetting his pants because she got it right?
It seems that whenever someone praises Pielke, or he praises them, they are always right-wingers. Yet, Pielke keeps up this "middle ground" dance and journalists keep falling for it.

On Wonder Twin powers, activate! posted 2 years, 10 months ago 9 ResponsesSkeptical Heretic, blah, blah, blah
So Wigley is essentially saying what we knew all along: that the non-skeptic herectic (remember the "radical middle" line from the mid-nineties?) was just a bunch of nonsense masquerading as deep thought. As Wigley points out, Roger has published more on hurricanes, but not "hurricane science."
So what does Roger do? Pielke is just trying to insulate himself against charges that he's little more than a contrarian whose blog functions as a chum line to lure in journalists.
Wigley may be more respected in science and he may have published widely in science, but he is not often heard from, unlike some media stars who blog.
Thanks for this, David.
