- I agree with Joel on a lot of points. I like to think of Mr. Salatin as Michael Pollan with boxing gloves on. I don't want to see the USDA or FDA eliminated, because that would not solve anything, but I really wish that the industry lobbyists would be barred from Washington, DC, because our decision makers tend to listen to them more than to their own citizens. Of course, they have way more money than any of us have and as the saying goes, "Money talks." But is the lobbying bullsh*ters would be forced to walk, I would be much happier. Once Vilsak removes himself from Monsanto's back pocket and starts true regulation of GMOs and holds Monsanto responsible for their illegal release into the human and animal food supply, only then will I give him a chance.

Consumers should be free to buy vehicles that meet their family needs in terms of affordability, passenger room, payload capacity, increased safety features and utility. I can buy chicken from the store I work at, but it is raised by the Hutterites and they are smaller and can be tough. This chicken is amazingly tender and large enough for 3 meals.

I don't buy it that by plugging up your sweat glands that you will not have some negative effects happen. You need to sweat. The data will come that will prove wearing antiperspirant is harmful to women. The reason guys can get away with it is they don't shave their pits. How sad. I really enjoy bats. When I was living in Austin, TX (GO LONGHORNS!) it was a nightly event watching them zoom out from under an overpass and tourists would make pilgrimages to see them. They are extraordinary creatures.
I'm sure it will be discovered that mankind's destruction of the environment whether by the bats eating pesticide-laden insects, foul water and air, etc. will be the cause of their dying off.On Mass die-off of bats in U.S. Northeast worries and puzzles researchers posted 1 year, 8 months ago 10 Responses

In Montana, unfortunately the ranchers win
I live in Montana and we have a lot of ranchers. They are the ones who most often scream and yell about de-listing any animal that even remotely threatens their livestock. We talking about an outrage over hunting wolves, but the poor coyote can be hunted all year long and doesn't require a hunting license.
Montana has a strong environmental voice and we try to positively enact change, but it seems our law-makers listen more to the ranchers.

A recent peer reviewed study was done by Emory University showing children who are eating a conventionally grown diet have been found to have nerve-gas like pesticides in their urine and when they have been fed an all organic diet, the pesticide disappeared within 36 hours. See the Organic Consumers Association article below and you can also download a copy of the study.
This overwhelmingly proves that conventional agriculture is harmful to not only the environment, but to our littlest citizens.

Even though having a garden may not provide wheat, soy, or for some corn, you will be saving money by eating your own home-grown produce. I am starting for the first time this year and can't wait. My mother has had a garden every year since I was a child and I have benefited from her surplus, but this year I will be benefitting from her gardening savvy.
I also work for an organic supermarket and receive a discount on all of my purchases, which really is helping right now. CSA's are also a great way to help farmers and receive weekly produce.
I am an omnivore, but all of the horrors I have witnessed about confinement practices and the callous disregard that some of the workers have for these poor little beings have encouraged me to really cut back on my meat consumption. I only eat organic free-range meat and since I work in an organic supermarket, I know exactly who owns the ranch and what their stewardship practices are.

Health effects of too much smoke
I appreciate your frustration 314159265 and I can get pretty fired up myself when people discuss GMOs or any other thing that I am passionate about, but I use paper in my wood stove because it is more efficient and I don't want to have to breathe more smoke than I have to.
If I ever want to cook anything on my wood stove, I would set it on the cook top and not use the fire itself anyway. Smoke even in the most seasoned wood could leave a bad taste on the food I would think.
As far as the environmental impact, my home is set up with electrical heat, expensive (previous owner often paid over $300/mo) and supports the electric industry. Thanks Pathos!
As an avid hunter, I too am saddened when what I do is misunderstood. I adhere to the Native American philosophy where I thank the animal for it's sacrifice to feed my family through the winter.
Rocky Mountain elk are some of the most glorious, elusive creatures in the world. I feel honored when I am even afforded an opportunity to shoot one. I also live in Montana in an area visited by many people every hunting season. GMOs are not the answer to diversity
I don't think you guys are getting me. I am not a "single minded environmentalIST" as atreyger says. I am a conservationist. I think that the environment should be used sustainably and with common sense. Is it common sense to launch a science that has not had any long term testing to see what the ramifications are by it being released? As an eater of organic foods, GMOs are threatening what I eat.
Children are suffering from allergies that were not present when I was a child, what has changed in my diet compared to theirs? They still eat fruits and vegetables, but with the pesticides INSIDE the food rather than ON it. Is that healthier?
GMOs received the most press they ever got when monarch butterflies started dying off due to Bt Corn. If there was no Bt corn would that have happened? Pesticides have been around for a long time and the butterflies have been still thriving. Now don't take that as a promotion for pesticides as I said before I eat organic food and frankly that is the only way to go.
GMOs are contributing if not causing "superweeds." These things do not happen in organic, sustainable agriculture. What will the future hold once all weeds are these new "superweeds"? I am so frightened about what will happen to organic agriculture once these things start to happen and they will.
It was posted before that GMOs are helping the third world countries and that is simply NOT TRUE! Monsanto and Syngenta have pulled out of the "Feed the World" ad campaign they had because the third world wised up and rejected their GMOs. If you have doubts about what I'm saying. Look up Vandana Shiva and see what she has to say about GMOs, or see her story profiled in the GMO Triology DVD series.
I am not advocating no technology. It just seems that the focus of the FDA is not to help the citizens, hence my use of their acronym, it's to line the pockets of the multi-national companies who lobby on the Biotech industries behalf and to get pro-biotech people to get employed in the FDA or other regulatory agencies! I'm not making this up. It has been documented. The few independent studies that have been done say GMOs are dangerous to the food system. See the GMO potato study done by Arpad Puztai who was an advocate of GE before he performed his study on the Lecithin spliced potato.
I think that the American public needs to wake up and demand the FDA do the job that they were hired to do. Protect the American citizens from dangerous foods and drugs. What research has been done on GMOs say that the FDA is not protecting us.On While global GMO acreage surges, herbicide-resistent weeds thrive posted 1 year, 9 months ago 29 Responses

Article was not prodding non-preventable obesity
I have to comment. It seems many posters are missing the point of the article.
Obesity is largely a preventable disease. Yes I know some people can eat very little and still gain weight, but that is not what Andrew is talking about.
I know you have seen the person with the piled up plate that is very heavy. They are obviously not expending the calories they are consuming. I was bulimic in high school and struggled with it for many years. The media and societal pressure are who I blame for my poor self image at that time. I no longer binge and purge now because frankly I have matured and realized that I am truly happy how I am and I must exercise and honor my body if I want it to slim down and I realize that may be difficult for some people, but come on! take baby steps. Everyone should be able to walk, unless they physically are unable to do so. Few obese people fall into this category.
I really enjoyed the article Andrew. I hope you realize that obesity is a very touchy subject with some people and those easily offended by being obese are going to see criticism however you try to put it.On The parallels between accepting obesity and ignoring global warming posted 1 year, 10 months ago 71 Responses

I am disappointed that Mr. Philpott did not ask about GMO corn. We are currently consuming it due to Monsanto's release of this product into the food system, they say in error, but I wonder if it really was. No shortage of hunter in Montana
Oh how I wish I could say there was a decline of hunters in Montana. I live in a rural town and there has NOT been a shortage of them here. Especially the stupid ones.
Don't get me wrong, I hunt myself, however, I unlike the hundreds of hunters in the woods near my home have respect for the land. They always say that there are more good hunters than bad, but I have a hard time believing that now. These idiots leave their garbage lying around, couldn't shoot the broadside of a barn and will wound but not pursue an animal (probably because it would recquire them to get out of their truck and walk) and drive like a bat out of hell on roads not meant to be driven on that fast.
I live in a residential town with children and pets running around, but they don't respect that and drive like they own the land. My husband and I are volunteer firefighters and my husband spent over a hundred hours on the Meriwether Fire that made national news, but these people wouldn't do something like that, they rape the land and take what they want and give nothing back.
If I had my way there would need to be a marksmen's and IQ test before they issue a license in Montana. I shudder to think how things would turn out providing "free" licenses to unexperienced hunters. Not surprising
I have been involved in the organic and sustainable agriculture movement for over 12 years now and this is not a big surprise. What is a surprise is that so many people don't have the information about factory farming/ranching or have their head so buried in the sand about what they can't do to fix it, that it has become the American mantra.
Currently, I work as a bookkeeper for the only organically certified supermarket in Montana. I vote with my dollar on these issues. People often complain about the expense of organically-certified meat, vegetables, etc., but that is the only way to fight this type of abuse to these animals.
Unfortuately, the USDA has screwed up with the organic certification program as I knew they would once they started it. They are now involved in a class-action lawsuit along with Aurora Dairy because they have allegedly been fraudently using the USDA organic label for factory farmed milk products, which goes against the organic certification policy. Check out The Cornicopia Institute's website at www.cornucopia.org for more details about this important lawsuit. This may be the first step in removing factory farming from agriculture.
