Celebrate by killing billions of innocent animals - What is wrong with you people! Really think about it, how can you celebrate at the death of so many innocent animals.
Do people honestly think that by eating dead animals, you can have more fun? and eating the skin of animals will bond them more with their families?

CountBlah - I agree with you there is so much abuse done to animals, - whether they are dogs, cats, or cows! I too have watched animal cops and walked away feeling a complete sense of anger and hurt.
However I would like you to consider the following points about a vegan world.
- People would never just all of sudden stop eating animals. It would a gradual effect.
- The gradual consumption in animals would decrease the demand, hence decreasing the supply, as it would not be as profitable.
- As demand drops, animals would not be unnaturally breed as they are now.
- The fewer animals would gradually go back to the way they use to live before humans captured and caged them. No animal was born into a cage, before humans made it a profiting business.
Please remember animals were fine before we got involved. And they will be fine when we stop messing with them. With time animals are very adaptive.
Its us human animals that do not know how to change!

I hear "I am part of the food chain" a lot. And I have always wanted to ask, - who eats you?
I can understand humans being eaten by bears and lions in the jungle, if we did not use any weapons or machinery. But really in comparison that occurs so infrequently that's not even worth considering. - Example 10 billion animals slaughtered per year, 10 bear attacks. - bear usually than killed.
Also when people are buried maybe worms feed on dead bodies, but many people are getting recremated. So Again who eats you?
So technically its not really a chain, - its more like we use all the dominance we have against animals that are mostly defenseless against our guns and agriculture machines.
Somehow it does not seem fair, - or maybe for some people being fair is not that crucial. - Just an observation!

Your question: "Do you recognize all the field animals that might have been killed bringing your dinner to your plate? I mean the mice, squirrels, rabbits, insects, etc., etc?" -
My answer: Yes. I grew up in Orthodox religious family. And every year we had days (usually one or two) where we fasted to absolve the sins of causing the death of the field animals for our foods. Now, as an adult I do not belong to any religious infrastructure. But I still dedicate one day of fasting to acknowledge this. The fasting is not a self denial, but rather reorganization, of the lives that were lost. And the importance of being grateful for what I have on my dinner plate.
Your question: Do you recognize the migrant labor that goes into your food?
My answer: Being an immigrant myself, I do recognize the hard labors my counter parts have to endure. I am lucky to have a professional white collar job, but I know many immigrants that work on the fields as well as the slaughter houses. The people that work in the fields would rather pick vegetables and fruits than the work in the slaughter houses. Slaughter house have accidents are at an alarming rate, but are not reported due to illegal immigration status or legal lower economic status.
Anyway, this veering off the point. --

On the one hand these and other articles alike want people to change. Yet when there are questions about changing ones own ethical eating patterns. - There is such a abrasive fight, (often turning into personal attacks).
As a conclusion, I think these authors and readers only want change, - to a certain extent. A change that only supports their current way of eating, but allows themselves to feel better about the dead animals they eat.
Now, here is the real kicker - When a vegetarian or a vegan wants that same platform to ask for change, they are called hypocrites, preachy, self-righteous, --- and all sorts of other names! - Just because they are pointing out a more ethical way of eating!
Oh and by the way - "Chicken Moment" - what the F is all that about. Whether you personally know your chicken, or you don't, do you really think the animal cares either way? I mean, seriously do you think the chicken, says "Well, now that I have seen the face of my killer, I feel so much better!"

I have congratulated Tom on his excellent writing many times before. I am sorry if that seem to be over shadowed by my wanting less abused animals.
I am not trying to alienate anyone that wants to protect and care for animals. I have great respect for my local farmers. As a vegan I have even gone to my local dairy farmer and spoken to them about how much I respect them for their hard work and not selling their land to housing construction as so many others have on the last ten year in North Ogden, Utah.
I see the cows in the morning grazing on grass and enjoying the sun. And in the winter I see them protected in the barn away from the cold snow munching on the food the farmer is providing. - I feel happy seeing those cows everyday.
However, those situations are rare. And there are far more abused animals. And that abuse occurs because their there is profit in producing animal meat. If there was decreased or no demand for those animals dead bodies do you think the same level of abuse would occur?

Like you I too use sarcasms. However unlike you, I am not a writer. My words are less PC and more gut feelings of the changes I would like to see.
I understand we both want change. However I can not support the notion of eating animals. "Lets treat animals better so we can eat them later", is not a notion I agree with. I agree with "lets just treat animals better". That's it. There are so many options of eating better, healthier, non animals foods, so let's invest more in that.
See with your relation to (eating) animals, there is still a possibility for animal cruelty. Whereas my plight, tries to eliminate it.
We are both fighting the status quo. I very much hope that at least one us wins.

Tom, - When I started reading your accounts of appalling animal abuse and meat & dairy industries. I was very impressed with your writing. I still do applauded you for bringing these stories to us. However why do you seem to think that my veganism is not a political stance. I believe it is a simple demand and supply. If you do not demand abused dead animals than there are no/less abused dead animals. Can you honestly telling me that just because a animal is raised locally there is absolutely no abuse caused to the animal?
Tom, please do not give me lecture on consumers rights. I am consumer activist. I buy local fruits, vegetables, organic grain. I go out of my way to buy house cleaning/personal products that are truly environmentally friendly (versus just a green coloured lable). Jonas - Reasons y people eat more meat
To think that caveman mentally makes us eat more meat is silly, because than the same mentally would make me resist wearing clothes. Because cavemen did not wear much clothing.
Q: What is it that makes people want to eat more meat?
A: There are several factors that make people eat more meat. - nothing to do with real protein
1) the easiness of getting fast food
2) all tasty flavors from the spices and oils the animal is cook in - (ironically all the spices and oil come from plants)
3) Good marketing - to eat animals is a sign of wealth and freedom
4) More women are working, and therefore going for the easy pre made boxed high fatty cheap meats. - I am not against women working, as I am professional female, however I see many of my counter parts not really cooking for their families but opening the freezer and getting out a colorful box and heating the contents in the micro way.
5) The meat industry has brainwashed the protein myth so much it has become globally believed
6) Domination, many cultures believe that to prove your manhood you must bring down a breast - hunting -
7) Poor stereotypes still exist, that if you do not eat meat you are week and gay! - Versus a strong and fit!
8) In India people are trying to be more western by eating easily available meat
9) peoples unhealthy bodies are used to high levels of fatty foods and therefore wish to continue that fatty dietOn Are you a vegetarian? posted 1 year, 7 months ago 53 ResponsesA little too much.
Some people have argued - here and in general - that a little bit of dead animal meat will not be bad. Especially if it is local and organic.
However there was a time when majority of humans did that, as recently as 50 years ago. And than a little bit became the norm which led to over eating. - People have a hard time with understanding "a little bit". A little bit of meat to one person is completely different to another.
Majority of American's are the people we see in every walmart wadding around their 20 to 50 pounds over weight bodies. These people will not limit their consumption and therefore places like McDeath and Killer King will always be in business
The only way I can see change is if the food business's start to offer smaller portions and healthy vegetarain or vegan foods. And until than the majority of people in this country will continue contributing to the energy, economic and food crisis.
Personally, I could never be responsible for knowingly taking the life of another animal, when I have so many other wonderful, fresh and healthy choices. On Are you a vegetarian? posted 1 year, 7 months ago 53 Responses

It is great to see more vegan products. I usually buy vegan products - make up and home cleaning supply. Vegan means no animals in the product and not tested in animals. Which is great because no animal needs to die for my lipstick!
Plus, this creates more awareness, when I go to the local beauty store most assistants do not evne know what animal testing is, or which products do not test on animals. And I live in a city.
It is only consumer demand and business that meet that demand that will change the evil face of animal testing. - And gradually decrease animal cruelty in all aspects of life.

Please show me with facts and stats, how eating animals allows more energy, saves money, and improves the food crisis.
Also prove to me how the three are not related, because Sam in my humble opinion, we need to feed the grains to the poor (versus the animals) and stop polluting the environment and using up even more energy.I look forward to reading your facts, - but of course I know you will not be able to support your pro eating dead animals. I am not a peta supporter, but if this is a real effort to limit animal cruelty, than yes, I would support them. It would be more beneficial, educational and powerful to have vegan detergent/makeup/clothes etc.. (no animal products nor animal tested) and sell in the mainstream business market, versus showcasing big booby Pamela Anderson.
However, if they are doing this for real, than sure I am all for it. As our current foods are so far from being natural, -I think it would be better for people to eat lab meat than a real animal. - Sure local and organic is great, (I buy most of my foods), but really if a animal is sick, than it doe snot matter about the mileage nor the geography of the animal.

The HSUS.org is encouraging the Can. government to make these areas as tourist spots. Like the whale watching.
However, the government is a not putting a ban on the seal hunting/clubbing. Due to its financial and political influence from the fish industry. Everything you have shown as problems with growing grains/lentils is doubled, because that resource is going to animals and those animals use up more resources, to make food for limited people.
Plus, why are we feeding animals grains that should be feed to starving people?
Surely, you don't believe that the current American Standard Diet, is good for this country. Do you not see the fat and obese kids in this country? - I tell ya, if they ate more vegetarian meals, and less fatty meats maybe diabetics would not be at an all time high. Nor would blood pressure, or cholesterol. Have you seen the expanding waist size of people in this country?
I agree a vegetarian/vegan diet maybe not the answer to everything, but is great start.
As long as there are people defending the notions that is killing this country, the tax payer is going to continue paying for more drugs and suck up more resources.
Congratulations, you have succeeded in eating your sick dead animals.

How about we just fix the one we have now? - All in agreement great! On Do humans deserve to find life on other planets? posted 1 year, 8 months ago 14 Responses
Pangolin, Yes and No.
I agree about improved "hygiene" improving human conditions, and limit the number of diseases.
However factory farming and intensive farming causes much more damage then we can even understand.
Let me give you a very simple explanation. If you put 1000 pounds of lentils/beans in a small tight space, nothing happens. You can continue to eat them after a long time. (grain reserves).
However if you put 1000 animals in a very small space, and if even one animal is sick, that disease spreads, and it goes into your food system. - If this were not the case, why is there so much use to antibiotics given to animals?
I find your explanation of eating meat "oh because other animals do it", to be insulting and rather silly. Lions do not factory farm, nor do they pump their prey with hormones, nor spray their prey with arcsine.
Plus we as humans have a choice to eat better. -
I hope you can understand this crucial point. We can get protein plus any other healthy survival foods without "constant" killing.

Change or live with it! Just stop whining!
Animals are also often sprayed with arcsine, to ward off and kill any micro bacteria's. Then:
a) is it right to spray an animal with arcsine, - which can go in to the animals eyes?
b) is it ethically right to eat these animals, after all the suffering they have endured?
c) is it healthy to eat these antibiotic/ arcsine / hormone pumped animals? If we are willing to do such damage to animals, just to for the taste of meat. (Because there are other healthier options), than game on! Stop whining about this medical condition and that medical suffering.
Learn to eat lower on the food chain, or shut up and live with the disease. But please do not whine about how someone is now "SICK" because they ate a "SICK" animal!

The sad part is there are probably more downers case every where today, and it seems like we are just waiting for another media exposure to animal cruelty.
At some point, our government needs to take accountability of its actions. And we as the people need to stand up and fight against big business's that feed us sick foods. We as a society need to use our money to chose better options.
But sadly we do not use the freedom we have, to fight for good human health and good animal kindness. Instead we continue to either live in denial or even defend the same notions that are killing us and thousands around the world.

It's not a them against us issue!
"So, when the animal rights movement looks at my poor species, I will look at their concerns".
Why do the animal rights and caring about humans have to be mutually exclusive - I am vegan not just because of cruelty to animals but also, because I think it is unfair that we in the USA have so much food, yet 165 million die of starvation every year. So my thing is, I buy cheap wholesome good food, and save money. I save money from being vegan - (no meat, no dairy, no cheese, no ice-cream!- it adds up). That money that I save, I send to countries that have famine and I give food to people that I see being homeless, - in my down town area.
So "why is it a them against us issue". Its not!
Dear CanisCandida - In every group you will have the people that think they are better/greater/smarter blah,, but that's every group. Also, my time in NYC, - I noticed people had different characteristics to the people I meet in Italy, - sometimes it's just about where you are.

Also, if the meat is grown to be healthy, then the drug industry would also take a pretty big hit! - Again would they allow the development for something that makes people healthy? No!
That's two very big industries to take on! - This is like the oil and coal industry that is not allowing alternative energy sources. - We have the money, we have the intelligence, yet we do have a solid alternative energy! Erm,,,
I think if there is stop to cruelty, I would support this notion very much so! - but there are very powerful people that will not allow this!

Meat marketers and lobbyist have brainwashed so much. - It is sad to see intelligent people saying that it's okay to treat animals with such cruelty, for the sake of their taste buds!
Organic/local has nothing to do with cruelty free! Words such as "natural", "green", "organic", "local", get thrown around so much, its not even funny! - But that does not ensure any better treatment of an animal!
If as a society we continue to treat the week creatures with such disrespect, how can we ever say we have ethics?
One day when I am mother, I hope to teach my child about ethics, respect, love and kindness, and so far I see every little of that in our factory farms.
How can we call ourselves an "advanced society", when we exploit everything that is weaker then us!!!!

It alway amazes me how people can eat something that comes from so much pain and cruelty. People are ready to close their eyes and ears, and ignore the fact that to satisfy their meat eating habit hundreds of animals were treated with so much cruelty! Not to mention all the chemicals they are eating! -
I would never want to give my hard earned money to support so much cruelty on this earth. I have too much love and respect for myself, and all other creatures!
I guess it's not my karma, nor my medical bill, so I really should not care about other people's heart disease and obesity!

need for positive
Well it is our responsibility to do as much as possible. Simply because it was not the animals nor the plants that caused much of the damage.
We are always negatively interfering, (building more, polluting more, killing more, cutting trees more, destroying more). So maybe its time to interfere in a responsible and positive way!
But I think "responsibility" is trait that seems very difficult to for humans! I hope when I am an old woman I will look back and see that I was wrong.
I hope most humans do care enough to take responsibility our planet and all that live in it!

The over eating can of course a big tax on the person themselves and the planet. The key is for people to look at what their individual bodies need and like. There needs to be a education on the part of each person as to what they need to eat to be healthy and strong.

Disappointed with USDA
Over the next few years I think there will be a greater demand of organic foods. I see the demand for the organic foods, because of course our current method/relationship to food is not a healthy one. - my opinion -
I am disappointed with the USDA, for their lack support to the organic education and movement. I often think that the mass meat companies control the USDA to greater extent. And of course the mass meat companies would not benefit from the general public eating healthy organic meat/veggies. Because then the demand for the mass meat would decrease.

I agree with your last statement that "hopefully if you are an adult you've learned that you can't trust ads or marketing to tell you the truth". Its very surprising that many people - even adults have do believe those unhealthy fast food ad's -.

Then they complain about health issues. - gosh, maybe if they did not treat their bodies as a dumping ground for foods that have no value, their bodies would not be in such a bad sharp!
