Every now and then, the kitchen cabinet at Wired sits down and decides that they really have to tell the world what they think. Although their techno-enhanced absolutionary tone goes beyond cocky, honesty I don't care. If I want to know about the coolest consumer product or some cultural meme that I haven't heard yet, I look to wired. But if I want a real assessment of other issues outside Anime and flat screen displays, I look towards other more dedicated publications. My concern is that every hipster geek throughout the land will not do this, and take every word in this issue as biblical cannon.
Technological determinism is a myth. Problems like climate change gets solved by people using science, pragmatism, and common sense, not by Moore's Law.

Great ideas all around
PCD sounds like a bright (and handsome) lad who likes his job and is respected by his colleagues and whoever he works for should treat him to various rounds of drinks at the next holiday party :)
I'm amazed at Umbra's answer and all the responses to this query, I didn't know how much was involved in wondering about something that really just takes up .0001% of my daily decision process, but with all the pots my co-workers and I go through, I'm sure the energy it takes to meet our consumption is equally amazing.
I personally like the giant thermos idea, especially if I can just take a kings ransom of coffee and horde it for my own caffeine infused greediness, not to mention that although nuking the remaining java would make me feel better about things, I'm in the school of not zapping the delicious organic beans that Tom selflessly brings to the office regularly. Anyway, it's a great holiday gift idea for whoever has stake in my happiness (friends, girlfriend, mom, that's a hint!)On Umbra on reheating coffee posted 2 years ago 20 Responses

Is the smoking gun ice cold?
Man! If the previous link is true, what is Nokia up to? Are they trying to create false fears in order to manufacture a toothless environmental campaign to boost PR? Do some chargers work this way but not others? This announcement by Nokia hit the blogs and podcasts of many tech journalists and pundits, many of them reacted the same way I did. My head is swimming in confusion right now.On Unused mobile power adapters still use energy posted 2 years, 6 months ago 5 Responses
Power use for device check mechanism
You know, I've been thinking about that. I know that some device chargers initiate a device check, and will not charge unless the device is "approved" to be charged. You see this allot in AC adapters for laptop devices (Dell is notorious for doing this). I wonder if holds true with mobile phones as well (especially "smart" phones). But a line test would be an interesting experiment to do. You've found out yourself of various devices around you place that use wattage, I personally am curious about similar things around my apartment. Technorealism
It's been interesting to see these discussions over the last 48 hours. I will have to admit that the Technology Review article and my corresponding
post about it is a bit "cheerleaderish", a trap that many technocrats tend to fall into. But I would like to assert that within the context of eco-technologies, there has been a slow but steady paradigm shift in the increase of research and development, or at the least, media attention to it.I believe that people who are dialed in and know what's at stake in all this will not "avoid" any personal or community change on their part, and just want to wait until some miracle technology comes out of the techno-ether to save
their skins. Remember, it was the use of industrial based technologies that got us in this mess in the first place, and if we are to learn anything for this period in human development, it that we all should be mindful of the external effects any technology will have on the eco-system.That said, current and future technologies will have a role in solving this crisis. As part of the "triple threat" of policy and lifestyle change, technological change must and will happen. And I think as technology users, I believe that we at least have to be aware of what's out there in development, and add that knowledge to whatever personal and community based commitment we place on ourselves to help out. Enerprise Green Servers
bhurley:
I wonder that too. According to a review of the machine on Personal Computer World, it does have Apache2, Mysql, and PostgreSQL preinstalled on the machine, but I reassert that this is presumed to be for small to medium size websites. But perhaps a cluster of Green Gems could be enough to power a Enterprise site like Google, Amazon, etc. On British-built server up for big award posted 2 years, 9 months ago 6 Responses
Good question
Janis:
To answer that, it's good to compare the Z1 to a server of similar capacity. For example, the Dell PowerEdge 840 workgroup server was designed to do pretty much the same jobs as the Z1 (small business level file serving, email, low to mid-traffic web server, etc).
According to Dell's Spec Sheet, the PowerEdge 840 runs at 420 Watts, almost ten times that of the Z1 (it's not toaster difference, but what is?). To Dell's defense, the Spec sheet does not give any information regarding energy saving features that may come bundled with the machine, but at risk of being to presumptuous, I doubt they can beat 1 Watt in idle mode.On British-built server up for big award posted 2 years, 9 months ago 6 Responses

Developing features on an active website is an organic process, and although we're excited to get this new feature out there, it is still new and in will behave a ways that other "Beta" releases do.
