greenwashing
"Greenwashing is cheaper and faster, and that's been GM's motto for quite some time."
Well, now they're paying the price for their SUV-induced sugar high. They would also be smart to back national single-payer health care. Alas. On GM turns to greenwashing. posted 4 years, 6 months ago 5 Responses

I'm pretty sure his assertion that natural gas plants (used primarily for peak load times) are an alternative to nuclear power is hogwash. Still, glad to see a broad coalition emerge that wants to kill this thing.

"free market environmentalism"
"Someone should e-mail that diary to John Stossel who thinks it is the free market that is cleaning our air and water."
that's key -- there's no invisible hand when it comes to this stuff. while I think it's import that environentalists understand how economics works, you have to remember that the catalytic convertor would have sat on the shelf were it not for environmental regulations. On An extraordinary diary on DailyKos about the coal industry. posted 4 years, 7 months ago 7 Responses

well, I live in pittsburgh
And I've actually done a bit of work on this issue. There's simply no way, with current technology, that this region can power itself using anything less than 50% coal. There aren't enough spots for wind farms or large-scale solar arrays, nobody wants to build more dams, and the existing ones could only fit in a few hundred MW of power. There isn't enough good farmland that is suitable for switchgrass, either. So we're stuck with coal, at least in this area of the country. On Congress pours more money down the "clean coal" drain posted 4 years, 7 months ago 17 Responses
here's the dilemma
In our political system, only when things become crises does action commensurate with the scale of a given problem take place. The trouble, however, is that folks like Paul Ehrlich got their initial predictions wrong, and so a lot of people now view this global warming stuff with a jaundiced eye.On The magazine's editors note that environmentalism is already changing. posted 4 years, 7 months ago 6 Responses

I look at it this way
On balance, having the Economist pay attention to things like valuation of ecosystem services is a good thing. So even if they're full of it because they haven't been paying attention to the origins of such work, I'm happy to have them acknowledge that the concerns are serious and that there are things that need to happen to address them.
As for Michael and Ted, I think their influence has been positive even if it was in many ways a big FU to the environmental movement. On The magazine's editors note that environmentalism is already changing. posted 4 years, 7 months ago 6 Responses

a question, Dave
It seems to me that there ought to be a business opportunity in creating financial instruments that allow energy-savings to be factored in to the "buy price" of a given thing in order to make it more attractive to consumers--thus making Alan's "investment" concept more tangible. The only thing like this that I am aware of is Fannie Mae's energy efficient mortgage, however. On Two great tastes that taste great together posted 4 years, 7 months ago 3 Responses

Agreed
I think it would be very helpful, actually, if the big groups (and donors) would come together around a set of priorities and see what kind of explicit deals they could make with potential partners. I still do have some doubts about the pragmatism of the "creation care" folks, I have to admit, after some more consideration of the issue. I'd hate to empower them in other areas--for instance, if they're backing judicial nominees for social reason who think federal environmental regs are an abomination, then forget it. But the auto industry, unions, neoconservatives, and even your National Review types are ripe for the picking. On A new generation of activists eschews the single-issue focus of its forebears posted 4 years, 7 months ago 1 Response
