I think you're right on Umbra. Many people do not realize the harm caused by artificial Christmas trees. Not only are they made of PVC but they take how long to biodegrade? Decades? Centuries?

I would agree to that the average consumer should consider buying a living tree or perhaps none at all. But for Grist's more eco conscious audience it should be recognized that there are many environmental benefits to real Christmas trees.

-1 acre of Christmas trees provides the daily oxygen for 18,000 people

-Christmas trees are recyclable and biodegradable

-Since Christmas trees need years to mature they become animal habitats, encouraging wildlife

There are many other benefits and this article does an excellent job of summarizing.
