- My clever son-in-law brought to my attention a story from the Guardian about the negative impact our pets, especially dogs, have on the environment, and how we might be better off eating them. My more clever younger daughter (his sister-in-law) pointed out however that the greatest negative impact on the planet comes from human beings, so if we were serious about protecting the environment, we should all commit suicide. They were laughing about this, btw, as my son-in-law adores his small dog and would rather starve than eat her. But opinions like yours really sour environmentalism for many people. What a mean-spirited thing to say to a new mother-to-be.On Ask Umbra on trash, toxics, and tots posted 6 days, 12 hours ago 7 Responses
- I realize we need to do all we can to draw attention to the issue of global warming, but does Grist have to stoop to PETA-style sexism and feature clothes-stripping supermodels (reason #25)? This newsletter seems most fond of showing women in various stages of undress, but men---attractive men---are rarely shown in same. What say you, Grist? On Top 25 reasons to give a damn about climate change posted 1 week, 3 days ago 31 Responses
this is no surprise
For years the state of Washington and specifically the Olympia city police have had environmental activists under surveillance or have subjected them to periodic harassment. My son, a student at Evergreen, was present at a couple of protests in Olympia but was never charged with a crime. When he went to visit the state capitol to lobby for eco-friendly practices in state offices, he was surprised to see that the security guards at the entrance had his photo and personal information on their computer. When he asked why they would keep his personal data on file, the guards refused to give him an answer and denied him entry to a public state building. This, in a so-called progressive, eco-conscious state.
It would be interesting to see how many of us have files being kept by local police and state law enforcement. On Police spy on climate activist while global warming goes unarrested posted 1 year ago 4 Responses
