Joe, I'm glad you mentioned cogeneration and energy efficiency. To me, that's really the key here. Sean Casten, who writes here at Grist and is the president of a company that does this stuff, has written extensively on this topic. Over two-thirds of our greenhouse emissions come from the production of power and heat; only about a fifth comes from cars. So what seems like a more urgent idea -- improving our abysmally inefficient power system, or increasing gas mileage standards and such? All of the above is necessary, but I think cogeneration -- or what I prefer to refer to as a form of energy recycling, since it captures waste heat -- is the single best way to hack away at the global warming problem.
