  • Yes Kandimba, it's in the article - best wind resource in europe and the 3rd lowest use of the resourse!

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have been talking some of the talk for years but sadly doing absolutely nothing to deal with climate change. Not prepared to spend money helping Vestas to re-tool the factory in the UK to make turbine blades which would work here and save those jobs in green industry. Instead, what have we been spending money on? Widening motorways, bailing out banks (including those who then, under public ownership, lend money to companies who deforest and develop oil-shale). Fighting wars - Oh yes, loads of money spent there. And they gave the go-ahead to expansion of Heathrow airport.  Sadly the main opposition (conservative party) are no better.  And let's watch out for another thing - Britain might decide to use offsetting (buying permits to pollute from poor nations) to account for some of the reduction, which, of course, would be entirely wrong.  I also wonder if part of our reduction is based on the collapse of industry and having all our goods made in China.

This reminds me of two things. The first is an article by George Monbiot at http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2008/06/10/small-is-bount ... which I recommend. It seems that smaller farms are more productive than larger farms.
The second is Dr Seuss' story 'The Lorax', in which the Once-ler keeps on biggering and biggering and BIGGERING and BIGGERING until he had chopped down all of the Truffula trees and driven out all the local wildlife (the Brown Bar-ba-loots, the Swomee-Swans and the Humming fish). But when the Truffula trees were all gone, there was no more money to be made, so that put an end to his biggering!  Get it from the library - it's a great book - all ages.On Now that farmers have gotten big or gotten out, it's up to alternative farmers posted 1 year, 3 months ago 1 Response
