  Lack of training, lack of follow-through

  I recently had an odd telephone encounter with a poorly trained Democratic National Committee representative that your article helps to explain. When my phone rang, I happily received the call; after all, I gave my phone number to the DNC and indicated my interest in participating in political activities. But when I asked the gentleman why specifically they were calling, and inquired as to whether they might be looking for volunteers, he hung up on me!

  My immediate thought was "Well, this is why Democrats are losing elections." But less cynically, I do think that many organizations are too quick to grab any available volunteer for their few moments of free time, and throw them into encounters with the public. Greater understanding of the issues and what one can do, outside of writing a check, is necessary to effect change in any organization.
