ethanol
Getting ethanol from corn doesn't make any sense. You can make ethanol from any number of materials. We only make ethanol from corn now to 'help' the corn farmers. When we need the corn for other purposes, we can easily make ethanol from other materials. Used newspaper makes excellent ethanol--my husband described a process to do so twenty years ago, but nobody was listening. And it looks as if no one is listening now.

Bush, his values, and the environment
W. feels strongly on the issue of abortion. While I don't agree with him, I can understand his orientation. However, I cannot understand how he can feel so concerned about abortion, and so unconcerned about the thousands of children in danger of pre-birth damage from mercury poisoning. Having the polluters "monitor themselves" has not worked in the past, and is not working now; the level of mercury in our environment, already high, is rising at an alarming rate.
And mercury proves highly toxic to unborn babies. The damage can be terrible, and it can't be fixed. (If you want to know more, check out the mercury poisoning in Japan, a decade or two ago.) This strikes me as yet another issue on which a narrow focus fails to see the forest -- or the trees.Martha Bartter
