    hot water waste

I learned from an unemployed friend to turn the water heater off , except for one hour before a shower.   Amazingly, most people think this wastes heat because "you have to heat that cold water again"... Even a Physics graduate told nme this!
    - moral: the unemployed know more about practical thermodynamics than graduates?

[to convince any silly graduates: say, "If I'm going away for 5 years, should I leave the water heater on? How about 5 days?
    - the actual reasoning is this: waste energy is that which escapes from hot water, the hotter the more waste heat escapes  (4th power?)]On Umbra on waiting for warm water posted 4 years ago 2 Responses

    Dams,

In the early 1960s we watched films at school, provided free by the UN? I dont know.

The two most prominent topics wre DDT and DAMs
Both promised a bright new world woth electricity and no malaria.
    How times have changed.
Actually, in New Zealand, several dams built on the Waikato river displaced few (the country is sparsely populated) and I dont recall any biome tragedies. NZ  remains oil-less and largelyv powered by water.  Later projects got nasty, with beautiful lakes drowned and cheap power forever granted to RioTinto. On Jacques Leslie's Deep Water sheds light on dam dramas posted 4 years, 1 month ago 1 Response
