Gotta Wear Shades
I really appreciated the editorial. Until recently I had been pushing the envelope of my personal environmental action with a heavy heart, aware of how much of the natural wonders of our planet are at stake. Where I live, in a small, old suburb of Philadelphia, I often felt like a one-man environmental demonstration: when I bike to work, mine is the only bike on the rack, and once, while bagging the recyclables at the office to take home, a coworker commented, "Oh, that reminds me of back home in Germany", etc. Global warming REALLY fed into my sense of hopelessness.
What renewed my optimism, (and I'm generally an optimist) was reading the book,"Plan B" by Lester Brown of the WorldWatch Institute. It's available free for the downloading. His careful analysis clearly demonstrates that human civillization can rapidly become sustainable with current technology.
My next step: canvassing with the Sierra Club's Building Environmental Communities program this Saturday. On Drop that apocalyptic vision and start imagining a positive future posted 3 years, 3 months ago 56 ResponsesClick here to view comment in original post
Discarding Xmas lights
Every package of mini-lights that Ive seen has borne the warning, "contains lead". I assume that it's in the solder or the insulation. It gives one pause before tossing these in the trash. Better to cannibalize an older string and keep replacing bulbs in a newer one as they burn out, then use the wire for something when all the bulbs are gone.
