translation to US mpg terms
Just to give some perspective a new sales-weighted fleetwide average of 120g/km is equivalent to about 46 mpg for a gasoline vehicles. 130 g/km ~ 42 mpg and 140 g/km ~ 39mpg.
Seeing this as a fight between 39 and 46 mpg may make us American greens cut the EU automakers a little slack, when we realize the US sales-weighted average for MY2006 was 21 mpg I believe.
Who thinks a 140g/km rule for the short term doesn't go far enough? I'd pat the EU on the back for something so stringent! Industry would seem to support it. Who is for getting action quickly? On Try, Try Again posted 2 years, 9 months ago 1 Response

Good testimony
I found Roger Pielke's testimony to be quite insightful. His thesis, that politics and science are very difficult to separate in practice, seems important to emphasize. Such an understanding is critical in the design of policymaking processes that will give us good environmental policy.
Grist readers may find this a useful counter point to Umbra's column yesterday whose rule of thumb seemed to ascribe too much "objective neutrality" to anyone with the title of scientist (though I agree with her basic conclusion in this specific case).
