  "It's all about personal choices"

  You've put your finger on exactly the attitude that annoys the heck out of me.  Our largest environmental decisions are not personal at all but collective, especially those having to do with land use, development, and transportation.  You can't individually choose to have your metropolis organize its future growth around effective public transportation, for example.
