Try homemade cloth pads
A fun gift to give to your eco-groovy girl friends. I use old towels as the inserts and reuse fabric scraps or old flannels as the exterior -- it saves me money. Great thing to do as a sewing-circle project.
Construction of one pad takes about 15-20 minutes if using a sewing machine.

It does make the use of zip-ties which is not necessarily an eco-groovy solution but maybe somebody can suggest an alternative.
