Environmental sin and 10 Commandments
I appreciate the sin analogy as it seems like a good corollary to lists of "Top 10 things you can do to save the planet"-the environmental version of The Ten Commandments- which are often brought down from the mountain (this analogy becomes disturbing when one considers Al Gore as Moses and his film as stone tablets). Another analogy is that environmentalists confessing their personal sins are like soldiers on the battlefield confessing that they have committed murder. Individually, a soldier may see it as wrong that he pulled the trigger (e.g. turned the key to start an automobile), but without addressing the root causes of the war (such as larger political issues), a remorseful soldier will have a constrained ability to effect change by refusing to shoot. Maybe it would be more helpful to make lists of the "Top 10 things you can't do to save the planet" and began to realize that many environmental problems cannot be addressed solely by individual behavioral solutions. End-times prophecies
Overconsumption: An Ethical Dilemma for Christian Engineers offers some interpretations from geniunely concerned Christian engineers into why there is a discordance between religious views and sustainability. In the article they discuss biblical end-times prophecy:
"According to the dispensationalist end-times model favored by many evangelicals, the earth's fate is complete destruction in the not too distant future. Since, in this view, destruction is God's plan and is inevitable, it is to be accepted and even anticipated; environmental, social, and spiritual consequences of technology are interpreted as precursors of the coming destruction." ....
An alternative "end-times" view explained by the authors: "holds that instead of creation's destruction and subsequent replacement by a pristine new heaven and new earth, corruption will be removed."Does he also have an alternative take on the book of Revelations?
