McCain proactive & sensible on climate

This posting lacks a fundamental misunderstanding of how our federal government works.  A President McCain would not be in a position to author legislation, his job will be to sign or to not sign into law legislation authored by Congress.  Whether he would sign into law a progressive cap-and-trade bill must be judged against his repeated statements on climate change, environmental stewardship, conservation, and a deep understanding and support of our greatest environmental laws (Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Marine Mammals Protection Act, Nat'l Environmental Policy Act). Based on this record, I believe a President McCain would sign into law a progressive cap&trade policy that exceeds McCain-Lieberman, if Congress presented such a law to the president.

Further, unlike Senators Clinton and Obama, Senator McCain's view of environmental policy goes far beyond climate change.  The only other issue of importance to the Democratic candidates is environmental justice.  Again, refer to McCain's vocal support of the ESA, MMPA, CWA, CAA to see that his view of the environment is not only more  sophisticated than the Democrats, it is comprehensive enough to deal with natural resource management & conservation issues we face right now.

As a natural resource manager, I will be voting for Senator McCain in the general election-- a decision that I believe is well informed.

The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.

    McCain a smart choice...

Stay on the issues here: John McCain is the most pro-conservation / pro-environment Republican candidate out there, so if you live in a solidly red state, you would be advised to vote for him in the primaries.

He is realistic about nuclear, ethanol, and understands how climate change can affect our national security like no other candidate, democrat or republican, for that matter.  His record as a Senator: He has helped to add land to the conservation roles, has fought off greedy hands from ANWR, spoken out against ill-advised subsidies for ethanol, has all too often been a lonley republican voice for conservation.

    That's enough to convince me.

I hope that my Texas delegates go to McCain, not to any other Republican -- because as a Texas voter, Texas will give all of her delegates to a republican.

Happy New Year, thanks for allowing my 2 cents.  Grist is a great site!
