Taum Sauk Reservoir
I don't think I have a problem with this sort of thing, in theory. But in practice, it has had at least one nasty failure, in Missouri. They are building it back though.
The links take you to pictures of the pump storage reservoir that failed, doing tremendous damage to a well-loved State Park below. There were no fatalities, due largely to failure during the winter when the park is little-used. They did pull the park ranger and his family out of trees afterward, and some were in intensive care for a while.http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/mcgsc/Taum_Sauk_reservoir/aeri ...

Quoting Caniscandida:"(As a matter of history, I would be interested to know when was the last time anyone did this sort of thing.)" [referring to the intentional introduction of a non-native species for economic self-betterment]
Heck, probably in the last half-hour, or maybe even more last half-minute. There are virtually no laws against that sort of thing in the USA, never mind undeveloped countries, as long as you don't intentionally release it to a wild environment (escapes are OK, legally). I've had Chinese visitors last month interested in importing new species of our fish to China for aquaculture reasons. We are importing all sorts of potentially invasive plants for biodeisel production. People make a living searching the world for new and unusual plants, fish, other animals to sell as pets and ornamentals in the USA and Canada. I met several of these types while I was in Costa Rica (and yes, I was raising exotic fish in aquaculture at the time, and at least some of those fish are established in the country, but were already established before I got there). On They may not all be bad. posted 2 years, 5 months ago 82 Responses
