  A growing number of colleges and universities are embracing sustainability, for a variety of reasons ranging from social responsibility and PR to cost savings and student pressure. Organizations like AASHE are helping to build lines of communication among greening campuses. It features videos, descriptions and links about over a dozen institutions with innovative initiatives. The key in all of this is student commitment. That is the driving force that can transform every educational institution.   Does higher education really "get it?"

  Joel makes great points about the greening of higher education and cites several innovative programs. Every college administrator should read this article and understand his messages. It does make you wonder if the majority of colleges and universities really get it, about sustainability though. My company (Arnold Creek Productions) is producing an educational video on sustainability in higher education. We have learned about some of the fantastic programs and projects going on around the country. However, we don't see many examples of institutions effectively integrating sustainability or green thinking across the curriculum, administration and campus -- and outside within their communities.
