Peak Oil and Climate Change
Last week at the CERES conference in CA, Al Gore mentioned that Peak Oil and Climate Change would be the investment drivers in our country for next decade and beyond.
We have organized a conference in Washington DC to discuss the links between Peak Oil and the Environment-both issues will require large scale macro policy changes as well as shifting consumption patterns.
Information on the conference is at http://www.beyondpeak.org/Agenda.htmlOn Umbra on global warming posted 3 years, 7 months ago 3 ResponsesClick here to view comment in original post

He is right. Whether the peak in oil is this year or 2012, the physical fact of declining energy availablility for the planet will trump almost all other environmental concerns - this is the grand-daddy of ecological worries. Linked to carbon emissions but broader, peak oil will change our daily way of life.
Matthew Simmons has often said 'there is no Plan B'. I think a Plan B is a combination of turning our remaining fossil fuels into renewables at an increasing pace, and finding incentives, both top-down like fee-bates and 4 day work weeks and bottoms up like energy efficiency and sustainable lifestyles, that together will make a difficult transition in the Sustainability Revolution possible. The market is priced at the marginal barrel and therefore does not give you and I the correct signals of whats coming in a timely fashion- people should educate themselves on the intricacies of this issue in advance - education post peak will be much less relevant..On An interview with peak-oil provocateur Matthew Simmons posted 4 years ago 2 Responses

meat vs oil
I became a vegetarian 6 years ago. I started eating meat again last month.
I have been learning about Peak Oil and how much North American oil consumption is as a % of the world (30+%!). As oil peaks and goes into decline, its importance in our lives will be starkly apparent. The decisions we make by living in the 'system' of cell phones, automobile commutes to work, flying home for Christmas and holidays, etc all dominate the decision to eat beef or not, in terms of greenhouse gas use. I chose to eat soy because I decided not everyone on the planet could eat meat and be sustainable, therefore eating meat was unsustainable. I chose to eat meat again, because I drive a car 15 miles to school each day and take vacations - one trip to Hawaii takes care of most of the ecological savings of being a vegetarian. I couldnt justify the practice for the reasons I had chose it.
There are of course shades of grey on this issue - I still dont eat pork for other reasons, and a vegetarian diet is probably better for us, cheaper, and clearly more ethical. Thanks for your articleOn Umbra on soy vs. meat posted 4 years ago 27 Responses
