    Three basic reasons

Archaic zoning laws; cheap transportation/fuel; and too much consumer pressure to do, do, do, buy, buy, buy instead of just leisurely enjoying the pleasures and quirks of our neighbors. On Why isn't there more new urbanism? posted 3 years, 7 months ago 28 Responses

    Your health and TVP

I realize our main discussion here is environmental issues related to veggie vs. meat based diets.  But I feel the need to share some information I've come across recently regarding the toxicity and common occurance of MSG and other glutamates in our overly processed food supply.  Textured Vegetable Protein is another form of MSG and the health impacts should be carefully weighed before consuming even moderate amounts.

Truthinlabeling.org is a good first resource for understanding how much MSG is in our food supply and what it can do to your body (mostly your brain and nervous system).

What I am not clear on is if TVP from organic sources is any better with regards to the toxic effects on your body.  I am guessing that it doesn't matter since the harmful elements come from a combination of the plant itself (regardless of growing conditions) and the processing that is done to it.

I am all for locally grown foods (plant and animal) and also knowing what went into the food you are eating and how it was processed (what was added/changed).  So much of that information is hidden from the American consumer, but it greatly(!) affects not only our environment but our bodies as well.On Umbra on soy vs. meat posted 4 years ago 27 Responses

    Mulching with hay

Why not try some spoiled hay?  Make a trip to visit your local farmer (one with cows, horses, sheep, etc.) and see if they have some leftover hay from the winter.  It won't keep for them to use for next year, but it sure makes great mulch.  Pile it deep around your emerging veggies and it cuts way down on weeding.  Adds great nutrients.  Straw works too, but it takes longer to degrade and doesn't have as many good nutrients.  For more details about this type of intensive mulching track down a book by Ruth Stout about her gardening methods - she wrote several.  Happy mulching! On Umbra on mulch posted 4 years, 6 months ago 4 Responses
