    such a weasel

Kaine came out with an Energy Plan back in September in which he accepts without question that Virginia's electricity use will grow. While states like California and Maryland are making plans to cut their overall carbon emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2020, Kaine committed Virginia to reducing its emissions back down to -- drum roll please -- where it was in 2000, by 2025. That's showing some serious leadership right there.

The VA Dep't of Environmental Quality is having its final public hearing tonight. After that, the public comment period closes on March 12. And if all goes Dominion's way, the company can break ground as early as mid April (although they have already started bulldozing the site despite the fact that they still have not received EITHER of the two permits they need to build - talk about arrogant!).

Thanks for the post. Coal sucks and no one in a position of leadership should get away with unabashedly supporting it.On Tim Kaine burns national ambitions in coal furnace posted 1 year, 8 months ago 4 Responses

individual action matters, but it's not enough

Let me say, as someone who knows Mike Tidwell quite well, that he is not discounting individual action. He has solar panels on his roof, heats his house with a corn stove (using no-till corn grown on an organic farm), and, what's more, he invites people into his house four times a year to show them how they too can decrease their carbon footprint.

What he is saying, though, is that individual action is not enough. There is something mighty incongruous about calling global warming a crisis and then telling someone the solution is to change their light bulbs. Either it's not really a crisis or changing light bulbs isn't going to matter, so why do it.

Global warming calls for a total restructuring of our economy. We're not going to get there by asking people to please change their light bulbs. On Voluntary actions didn't get us civil rights, and they won't fix the climate posted 2 years, 2 months ago 61 Responses

    Fasting Today...

I am fasting today and am one of the organizers of the Climate Fast. It is inspiring to see discussion of the fast going on independently of our work here at USCEC.

The main coordinator of the fast, Ted Glick (whose fast is open-ended and will continue for weeks), is keeping a daily blog of his thoughts as he gets further into his fast. Check it out at www.climateemergency.org/blog.
