    It's not that hard--get hankies

I have chronic allergies and go through hankies like nobody's business.  (They really don't want to know, anyway).  My solution?  A "lot of 40 vintage hankies" on eBay.  They are beautifully embroidered so I always feel fancy using them.  There are a few rough ones in the bunch, but most of them are A-OK.  Having 40 means there is always one in my coat pocket or messenger bag.  On the weekends I do a "hankie round-up" to make sure they all get washed.  On A nosy review of recycled facial tissue posted 9 months, 4 weeks ago 10 Responses

    Unique registries

Donations are a great idea (and we got a few) but the culture of buying stuff for the couple is pretty much impossible to avoid--someone is going to buy you something.  For our green wedding we made a custom registry at www.findgift.com.  You start with a blank registry, then add items by linking to any store online or just typing in an idea from your head.  It creates a tally for each item so when people indicate that they're going to buy the item for you (or 2 of the 4 you request) you only get exactly what you want.  There are lots of other similar web registry services so snoop around.

We registered for only things we would really use, and were able to make listings for unique items including: experiences instead of stuff (like a gift certificate to a great restaurant), carbon offsets for our car, and candles from a local candlemaker.  On How to green your wedding posted 1 year, 6 months ago 7 Responses

    Greening of video games

My husband and I (and many of our friends) are passionate about both the environment and video games.  One thing I've been very excited to see are services like Xbox Live--we can download games and movies right to our living room with no packaging or drive to the store necessary!

I think a lot of people forget that video games are just another form of entertainment like TV, movies and music. They're not going to ruin corrupt our youth or ruin our planet any more than the rest. I am still hoping to see more video games with a message, but it's a pretty young industry and widespread distribution of indie games are just starting to become possible.  We should be the ones making games with an eco-theme!

    What's in a name?

People really do have associations with both "enviro" and "environmentalist," often negative. The challenge is to change people's definition of the word or get a new word all together. Either way it way it takes a lot of coordinated effort and, really, marketing. Think KFC. Do we want to be "Kitchen Fresh" (a clean environment = healthy!) or "Kentucky Fried" (enviros are greasy hippies!)? Don't believe that people will notice? If you say something enough times it becomes true in the minds of the public (see election 2004)...On Do you hate the word "enviros"? posted 5 years ago 13 Responses
