oops
oops. I see that is part of your post as well. What a cruel irony if environmental consequences of shifting to biofuels are not taken into account in this rush to cash in the new market.

palm oil as biofuel?
I just read an article on the BBC about how the EU goals for biofuel are resulting in shifts in agriculture to take advantage of the boom. I wonder if it is hoped that these date plantations will be used to provide biofuels, rather than snack foods? BBC article here.
Thanks for point this out; it's an important issue.

false tradeoffs
Wow, he has time to run a war and destroy unique ripiarian habitat in an otherwise arid region - quite the multitasker. Jaguars are also supported by that habitat -- but I guess they are more charismatic than lizards and thus a bad soundbite to toss about while putting forth jingoistic arguments for trumping the rule of law.

it not Kyoto, then what...
At some point, the refrain "what is in front of us is not good enough" becomes old and tired. If what is in front of us (Kyoto) is not good enough, then what is the specific alternative? Wait till we kill all the polar bears? We've wasted so many years saying "not Kyoto".
It will be interesting to see what our "representatives" roll out at the December climate conference in Bali...
