The Utility Regime Scores Again
<html>
This article appears in the Washington Post today (4/27/07) on the Administration's efforts to give the utility industry immunity from state laws (they obviously have total control over the federal laws now). It will be interesting to see how these Republican congressmen deal with this one.

More Budget Cuts to US Forests and Parks
I just wanted to post that the FY '07 budget for the White Mountain National Forest and the other parks/forests programs listed below have been severely cut by the Bush Administration. There has been a 10% cut overall with a 14% cut to Recreation and a 10% cut to Trails, resulting in a 60% reduction in the seasonal workforce.
In order for these cuts to be corrected congress needs to restore these programs at or above following levels.
- The $258 million proposed increase to National Park operations
that is included in the Centennial Initiative- $12 million for the NPS' Rivers, Trails and Conservation
Assistance program- at least $271 million for Forest Service Recreation, Wilderness
and Heritage- at least $78 million for Forest Service Trails (Capital
Improvement & Maintenance)- $69 million for the Bureau of Land Management's National
Landscape Conservation System- $125 million for stateside Land and Water Conservation Fund
(LWCF) and $220 million for federal LWCFIf you can write your reps in DC and urge them to support restoration of funding for these programs it might make a difference.

Not Your Father's EPA
This decision is a blessing and omen at the same time. A blessing because now the EPA will have to release reports and recommendations on CO2 emissions. This will keep pressure on the Administration to show that it is in some way addressing the issue. An omen because, as we've seen in the past, this Administration is absolutely awesome at ignoring empirical data, reproducing alternative versions of empirical data, and spinning contradictory misinformation to smoke out everybody in the room. Endless heel-dragging and frivolous debating is probably going to be the order of the day.
After the US Attourney purge, it is not likely you will see much honest and independent thought coming out of the EPA (not that you would expect any). In addition, groups like the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers will unbdoubtedly have spell-checking rights to these "scientific" reports as the utility corporations did when Cheney created our energy policy.
It will be interesting to see if congress exerts any oversight this time around. On This is a game changer posted 2 years, 7 months ago 19 ResponsesClick here to view comment in original post
strange ways
Sounds a little strange to me to reject environmental management on the grounds that it is utilitarian-oriented. I mean, isn't that the purpose of conservation? To bring about sustainability?
I am in complete favor of restricting development on federal lands and in areas where eco-systems are compromised. The hands-off approach works in a lot places. But most places where humans reside there needs to be a "managed" approach. Seems pretty clear to me.On Earth Firster urges a return to conservationism posted 2 years, 8 months ago 42 Responses
