    Knock knock

    Knock-knock-who's-there

    Plastic bag irony.

    Plastic bag irony who?

I spent 10 months training myself to re-use plastic vegetable bags at the grocery store, then I sent my clothes out for drycleaning.

Wear a helmet and stop worrying about your lungs

Until I moved to the country, I rode my bicycle to work 40 minutes each way in the terrifying traffic of Washington, DC from 1972-1991.

I too worried about my lungs. I wrote to some knowledgeable source about it (wish I could remember who he was). The guy said that one study he knew about showed that carbon monoxide levels in the lungs of rush-hour bicyclists were actually lower than those of rush-hour automobilists, presumably, he speculated, because of the increased respiration rate and depth of the bicyclists. On Umbra on bicycle commuting posted 4 years, 1 month ago 10 Responses

    Speaking their language

I believe that "not environmentalists" care about these things:

    1. Personal convenience
    2. Making $ through proven methods
    3. The status quo
    4. Matters that affect them here and now

Many believe the problem is not so serious as "we" think it is. Some believe it is not a problem at all. Some find "our" view frightening and refuse to pay attention. Others might think the problem cannot be solved anyway, so why bother to worry about it?

    So, to speak "their" language:

    1. Make environmentalism relevant.
    2. Teach, teach, teach the children.
    3. Make environmentalism profitable.
    4. Make environmentalism accessible.
    5. Focus on attainable solutions.

We're already heading in these directions, so keep the faith.

    Might as well jump

A friend to whom I directed the URL for the proposed July amusement of environmental jumping has this to say:

Thanks. You'd better remind me when the time comes. Improvements come to mind. First, people should be coordinated along lines of longitude - everyone should jump at noon in order to push Earth away from Sun. Second, we can all jump multiple times - say from 11am to 1pm, or perhaps 11:50 to 1:10 for the infirm and unfit. The view from space will be of a giant wave endlessly circling the globe. Holding a big rock or an elementary school child with backpack would increase the effect. Finally, this must be coordinated with the Moon's position - we don't want to put them on a collision course or tides will be messed up and everyone will have to buy new tide table books. Oh, those low-rider cars in LA can participate, too - some can jump clean off the ground.

What really worries me, though, is the thought I just had that cyclists may be the real cause of global warming. In all but the coldest weather I am cooking by the time I get to work. Maybe I should start driving before Greenpeace aims a harpoon at me.
