    not my favorite

I tried the grapefruit scented spray cleaner and wipes and found them to be quite average in cleaning power, won't buy them again.  The grapefruit smelled really good for a short while then actually smelled bad.  I find Seventh Generation multi surface cleaner to work better, and the wipes were kind of a dumb idea (what can I say, I got sucked into the vortex).  I now use the SG cleaner or baking soda with the Twist sponge paper towel which you can dishwash after use http://www.sustainableisgood.com/products/2008/04/twist.h ...

    don't

Seventh Generation powder sucks, too.  As does the aforementioned gel.  Seriously, I don't want to buy green products that don't work and don't think anyone else should either.  That's just enableing. On A test of six green dish soaps posted 1 year, 4 months ago 18 Responses

    Presents are so last year

As unsexy as it may seem, my husband and I decided this Christmas to take the money we would have spent on each other and put it into a savings account.

My siblings and their spouses and I have agreed to spend an extended weekend goofing around together instead of giving each other gifts this year, date has been set.

Also in years past I have been a fan of giving a donation of bees or trees or sheep or something to Heifer International for those people in my life, like my mom, that are really hard to shop for. Although last year I gave her the gift of taking down the ugly wallpaper border in her bedroom and bathroom and a gift card for a bucket of low-VOC paint in the color of her choice.  The year before I gave her a photo album of all the digital pictures I had taken of our family for the past 3 years but never bothered to print.  That's probably not green but not "stuff".  On 10 great ideas for "stuff-free" holiday gifts posted 1 year, 11 months ago 11 Responses

    How Clean Is Your House?

This is my new favorite show, it's on BBC America.  Two really funny women clean horrendous houses using the most basic things, they even cleaned copper using ketchup (acidity from tomatoes and vinegar).  They usually stick with household products like baking soda rather than anything storebought and rarely use bleach.  They have a book with tips but I can't vouch for it because I haven't read it but it may be helpful to some: http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Clean-Your-House-Woodburn/dp/ ...

One episode they cleaned a very nasty bathtub with half of a grapefruit with salt pored inside, rubbed it all over to cut the grime, then followed by nylon scrubby.  I cooked that night and had the better part of a lemon left over in which I pored coarse salt and went to town on my bathtub, worked well and smelled good.  Then I composted the remains of the lemon when I was done!

Also, my favorite tip is what they made into an odor-absorbing fragrant sachet--baking soda, lemon zest, contents of a few bags peppermint tea, fragrance oil optional.  So much better than all that polluting home fragrance crap they sell in stores! On Umbra on household help and homemade cleansers posted 2 years, 1 month ago 14 Responses
