be careful with the liquor boxes
Note: While re-using liquor boxes is a fine idea, the U.S. Postal Service won't take them, so if you're packing anything that might not fit on the truck and need to be mailed ... use other boxes.
I've never had a problem going to a big department store or grocery store and asking for boxes. They always load me right up with sturdy stuff for free.On Umbra on moving posted 3 years, 4 months ago 3 Responses

Nathan, sign me up!
I live in Portland and have known a few canvassers (who quickly grew to hate the job) and been frequently canvassed, which always leaves me frustrated and unsatisfied. When a friendly person comes to my door to talk about a cause I care about, I'm happy to see them. I invite them in, offer them a drink, and ask if I can do anything besides sign the petition and hand them some $20s. The answers I've always gotten have been "No thank you, I'm behind on my schedule and I've gotta make it to the next house" and "I don't know."
On the other end of things, I am frustrated by the fact that canvassing is always front and center when organizations want volunteers or min. wage jobs. I'm an introvert; slightly more than half the population is better predisposed to working phones than I am. When the local PIRG e-mailed a call for volunteers I responded immediately saying that I'd do anything but work the phones. I'm good with animals, I'm good with kids, I'm a decent public speaker, I'm a professional web developer and graphic designer, I can garden and lift heavy things, I can use GIS, I can research and write. I never got a reply. All they want is people to work the phones ...
So finding a healthy grass roots community seems daunting (especially, and a little ironically, since I'm a non-driver). I pursue my own eco work quietly by myself and with my friends. On Why green-group canvassing operations need an overhaul posted 3 years, 6 months ago 28 Responses

Recommendation for an actual gift registry
Traditionally one gets one registry tied to a large general/department store ... your amazon, sears, or walmart. If you have eclectic tastes or want very specific eco things from different vendors (Gaiam organic towels, Fire & Light recycled dishes, handmade bamboo serving spoons ... you LOHAS shoppers know who you are), I recommend Felicite, which acts as an intermediary registry, letting you list goods from a bunch of different merchants all in one place. I'm not affiliated with them, I just used them once and found the service to be good/useful/exactly as advertised. Best of all this way you can list specific charity donation "goods" in the same registry with more conventional goods. Very good.On Umbra on wedding registries posted 3 years, 8 months ago 3 Responses
