It's not cheap, it's sensible
I recently visited some acquaintances who had purchased a massive home that had several televisions and a home theatre, and found the whole experience depressing. Is that what we think is important? Children playing video games all evening instead of interacting with their guests? They certainly don't need more STUFF, and neither does my family.
Great article, Billy. We need to get out of placing importance on things. If a family member needs things, Christmas is a great time to get them, but every year it becomes harder. Really, what do you get for the man or child who has everything? More of the same? This school year started out with Skipits then Littlest Pet Shop now it's Webkinz - every month something new your child is outcast for not having.
How do we teach children not to be consumerist? It has to start somewhere, and a simpler Christmas sounds like a good place to me. Hello, socks and night clothes as gifts! Good-bye cheaply and exploitatively made toys and junk. On Are you brave enough to say no to a high-stress holiday? posted 1 year, 11 months ago 51 Responses

but for ladies with facial hair . . . ?
Hairy legs I can live with, armpits are fine unless I am wearing a tank top, but who is willing to be out-front in fashion by being the bearded lady? It has to be, sorry Umbra, wax or electrolysis - razors leave stubble and sometimes, bumps. On Umbra on shaving posted 4 years, 4 months ago 28 Responses

I drive and fly
I live in an urban sprawl neighbourhood and drive across the city to work. Took 9 trips for work in the last year. And, sorry, Umbra, I reproduce.
Good things - compost, recycle, organic gardener (to sorrow of neighbourhoods), eat only organic beef (mad cow scare), obsessive about energy efficiency and turning off appliances, and have firm plans to buy the hybrid Smart Car when they get the car-seat airbag-turnoff doohickey that they have in European models. 30 Word Pitch
Environmental Issues are Public Health Issues. Clean air, water, land are the best and cheapest ways to ensure our own survival. Those dying species are indicators of danger to ourselves.
