A cycle that feeds itself
I recently had the pleasure of spending a day at John Jeavons' research farm in Willits, CA. Jeavons, the author of "How To Grow More Vegetables (Than You Ever Thought Possible On Less Land Than You Can Imagine)", presented us with the basics of the Biointensive farming method which includes the interesting notion of growing plants for the sole purpose of producing compost material. They have achieved a true closed-loop system: all the compost and nutrition for the soil comes from the plants grown on that soil...no animal manure is brought in at all. It's hard work and requires an awful lot of calculation, but it can be done!

Nice response
Thank you so much for writing this post. The TIME article made my blood boil and I'm pleased to see a rational and thoughtful response here. I would have shoved my backyard-grown carrots down his throat :)On Joel Stein of Time takes a poke at the locavores posted 1 year, 10 months ago 10 Responses

Punk vs. hip
The author(esses) of both Vegan with a Vengeance and How It All Vegan! both came out of the punk scene: the foreword to Vegan with a Vengeance even mentions the punk 'do-it-yourself' ethic that vegans need to adopt to continue eating in a non-vegan world. The Skinny Bitch writers do not seem to be the punk type...do they think they're an anomaly or is this the beginning of bringing veganism into the mainstream culture? On What would you ask a 'Skinny Bitch'? posted 1 year, 10 months ago 4 Responses

Folding bikes rule!
I own a Dahon Speed 8 and my husband has a Brompton: we love them and ride them nearly all the time (both of us are bike commuters). Thanks for the Bike Friday review! FYI: the San Jose, CA airport is pretty bike-friendly and many people actually use the airport access roads to shorten their commute if they work in the area. http://www.sjc.org/travelers/tips.html has some more information - scroll down and click on 'Bicycles and Pedestrians' for their thoughts on the issue. On Business travel, Bike Friday, and the Spokane airport posted 2 years, 1 month ago 4 Responses
