One thing the article failed to clear up is whether male chicks are killed by every hatchery. If you saw the recent video of male chicks being sent to the grinder, you have to wonder, is every egg out there soaked with blood ? I wish I knew the answer but I assume that must be the case as even small producers "mail order" their chicks, and since only females are shipped, where are the males?

I (thankfully) no longer follow cable news chatter. What I do know is this, the Obama administration needs a spine. If this is the way it's going to be for four years not much will get done.
Shame on Grist for giving Glen Beck this much coverage.

the silliness. I applaud those who choose to be vegetarians or vegans. But let's make one thing clear, either of these choices are only fairly recent possibilities. Humans have had to rely on the meat of animals for most of their existence.
We have today a diverse variety of vegetables, nuts and seeds that can sustain a vegetarian/vegan, but that did not become possible until humans started traveling to different continents and exchanging plants.
I'm an organic vegetable farmer and life is life. Prejudice is what distinguishes animals from plants. Both are equally worthy. On To make the Thanksgiving centerpiece a sure triumph, go heritage -- and reach for the deep-fryer posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 5 Responses

I respectfully disagree...
If you are going to roast a turkey, do not baste it. That's right. Do not open the oven door. Put the bird inside, set a timer and forget about it until the timer goes off.
Everytime you open the oven door to baste, it increases the cooking time because the bird gets cooler and so does the oven. Not to mention that when you baste the juices don't get past the skin.
As far as deep frying, you sure do get some tasty birds that way. But the green way it's not, the amount of energy to create all that oil is very high.On To make the Thanksgiving centerpiece a sure triumph, go heritage -- and reach for the deep-fryer posted 11 months, 4 weeks ago 5 Responses

Good article but...
there's really no need for "organic research". Research is usually done to try to circumvent necessary procedures such as crop rotation, green manures and fallowing. The research has already been done. Those who want to farm organically can do so. Those who want further research are just looking for an excuse. On Why a Bush veto of the farm bill is bad for the food movement (and the world) posted 1 year, 5 months ago 3 Responses
