    telling the truth

Why isn't anyone pointing out that the Republicans are simply lying, again, to gain access to whatever their corporate cronies want.  Drilling in our environmentally sensitive areas will NOT reduce gasoline prices to previous levels.  The only real solution to our 'energy crisis' is to get into rehab and end our addiction to oil once and for all.  We need to re-define our means of transportation and energy supplies now if we are going to have a future. On House Speaker says she's open to compromise on offshore drilling posted 1 year, 2 months ago 4 Responses

    heating water

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned a solar (thermal) hot water system as a solution for Jesse.

A solar system with an adequately sized storage tank, placed in the basement, could meet not only his heating needs but also provide his domestic hot water (and heat his hot-tub to boot).

If he "backed up" his solar thermal system with a Bosch or Takagi variable flame tankless water heater, which are very efficient, he'd be "greening up" on several fronts AND solving his boiler problem. On Umbra on home heating posted 2 years, 6 months ago 14 Responses

    waving green flags

    sunflower:
You ask how we are going to continue our civilization without CO2 pollution.  The answer is that we, each and every one of us, needs to take responsibility for our part and act responsibly with what we can do.

First step: conserve.  For less than $250. you can change your lightbulbs (and turn them off) to CFLs and reduce your personal carbon footprint by 1.5 lbs. of CO2 per kWh of electricity saved.  Then look critically at the rest of your electrical usage: your coffepot, dishwasher, washer, dryer, refrigerator, water heater (basically everything) and turn it off, use it less, or replace it with a more efficient model.

When your kWh draw is as low as you can get it, then we can talk about generating your own electricity from the sun to cover your usage, or meeting your heating needs with solar.  When you take the last step, you've done YOUR part and it'll be up to the rest of us to do ours.On John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry chat about their new environmental book posted 2 years, 7 months ago 20 Responses

    WalMart

It doesn't matter how 'green' & orgainc WalMart makes their stores or products, as long as they continue to pay their employees poverty-level wages and don't provide any benefits, they're still the same old WalMart . . . making big bucks at the expense of their employees and the rest of us who pay for the MedicAid and food stamps that their employees are forced to use.On With big biz jumping on the green bandwagon, should activists cheer or jeer? posted 2 years, 8 months ago 13 Responses

    Rocky Anderson

Mr Anderson demonstrates what can be accomplished with a firm commitment to the energy/environment equation.  Cudos!

In response to Dorh83, don't be disheartened or 'feel unempowered'.  Federal leadership can't hold a candle to what each of us, as individuals, can accomplish by choosing to do what we can.  Change your lightbulbs, drive less, install solar thermal and electric systems, grid tie and co-generate, then tell everyone you meet how well it works.  Sell it!

If each household in the U.S. changed lightbulbs, we could reduce the CO2 output of the country by something like 912,835,800 TONS of CO2 per year.  Individuals can get it done.On An interview with Salt Lake City mayor and green innovator Rocky Anderson posted 2 years, 8 months ago 3 Responses
