This is helpful (although I wouldn't mind the pissing-wars aspect of these debates toned down).

But I've lost track: when I call my congresswoman to comment on Waxman-Markey, what am I supposed to advocate for?  Pass as-is, but no worse?  Strengthen it via X and Y?  Other?

This was one of the better anti-ACES pieces I have read, mainly in that it goes beyond a "this isn't good enough" screed.  But I second the question posed by Miles: what strategy (or change in the stasus quo- i.e. 2010 elections) would yield a better outcome?

I had to replace an old gas boiler in my house this past January (we just moved in, and didn't trust our old monster, either).  In my case the incremental cost was more than $3000, and my capital budget is a bit constrained this year, so we went with a FreeWatt Ready system.  This is basically just the gas boiler and hot water tank, but I can now easily add the generator when I have the dough for it.  The boiler itself is very quiet and efficient.

The economics of a freeWatt didn't blow me away, but it's not a bad investment either.  I do recommend that anyone facing a boiler/furnace replacement take a look.

In Sachs' defense, he does close with:

"Let me be clear, though. Cap-and-trade is a big improvement over the do-nothing status quo, even if it’s less desirable than a carbon tax. If politicians insist on cap-and-trade, we shouldn’t let the best be the enemy of the good."

That seems pretty reasonable.  (More reasonable than phrases like "head-slappingly", by the way, which brings back some of the shrilness I've seen in other posts on grist on this topic.  Please, keep it cool.  Enviro-shrillness is such a turnoff).
