America was only able to mask many of its unpleasant foreign entanglements because, at the time, there wasn't much of an international conscience. Now that the spotlight's a bit brighter on everyone we should be working with- not fighting against China.
Even though they're the first and we're the fourth, that doesn't mean that we have any less say in what goes on in Nigeria. In fact, as Wolverine pointed out, we host their head offices. John McCain is well experienced at using both sides of his mouth. I'm glad it's now easier to see what politicians say to their audiences- the days when saying the 'right thing' to each group and doing all the wrong things by all of them are over!

clearing up your conflict (hopefully)
In my humble (vegan for 4 years, veg for 10) opinion, keep the Birkies. Especially since you've had them for such a long time and Birkies are made to specifically form to your foot- I think it's better for the planet if you wear them 'till you can't wear them anymore.
