markets and markets
I had the same reaction you did and, in my own work on payments for ecosystem services, have faced similar issues to the ones described by Leonhardt, of how to tell the story. The way I do it now is to contrast a picture of a big farmers market in Peru, with the trading floor on Wall Street - both are markets. In one of them, you actually know what you are getting. There are markets and there are markets, and we need a more nuanced way to talk about them than simply pro/anti market, whatever that is. I'll have to elaborate on this one, but not this evening. more than meets the eye?
There may be something else motivating the "drill now" election year drill, that I only mention because I haven't seen it articulated elsewhere, which is that, once lease sales are in the 5 year plan, projected revenue, even if wildly speculative, can be included in the federal budget. I engage in some speculation about the implications of this here: http://www.postnormaltimes.net/blog/archives/2008/08/here ...
Further insights on this are welcome. On The internets weigh in on drilling posted 1 year, 2 months ago 4 Responses

according to Jevons Paradox
given the efficiency of hybrid vehicles, I expect a few neighbors to start showing up in hybrid trucks. Next we will have to knock out a few houses to make room to park the things, and more to widen the narrow windy road that comes into the neighborhood, and more to widen the beltway, already too small for its existing traffic load... Unless there is also a cap, and like maybe a carbon tax.On Honda fights to regain green car company mantle posted 2 years, 2 months ago 33 Responses
