  They shouldn't need more

  It was actually quite inspiring to finally see people figuring out ways to drive less when gas hit $4/gallon.  In fact I support raising the gas tax, a mileage tax, and taxing heavy inefficient vehicles when they are sold.  The fewer vehicles on the road the better.  

  I also don't fully understand why there is a revenue crisis at the Highway Trust Fund.  If there are less vehicles on the roads, the fund makes less revenue.  But shouldn't less vehicles also mean less wear-and-tear, and less maintenance?  Hence, there should be a correlation between number of vehicles and revenue needed.

  You don't always need cash to be green

  The First 2 R's

  How did we become obsessed with recycling?  What ever happened to the first two R's: Reduce, and Reuse?  I was always under the impressions that Reduce, Reuse, Recycle were listed in order of importance.  The most powerful thing we can do is reduce the total amount of resources we consume.  But for some reason (and I have a funny feeling it has to do with the economics of recycling) we've all become recycle crazy, but totally neglected the first two R's.  Everyone needs to think back to grade school when they taught us that Reduce and Reuse come before Recycle.

  Do it for the kids

  I agree with most of what Tom said.  Regardless of whether "global warming" is real or not we need to take the next step in energy technology.  We can't continue living at the expense of the natural world.  The sooner new alternatives are discovered the better off we will all be.  The current generation might be able to scrape by living as we do today, but there is no way future generations will be able to consume as many resources as we do without suffering dire consequences.  

  Now the question becomes how do we convince the majority of the population that change is necessary?

  Buy Bulk

  I love the idea.  Not only does it save resources in packaging, but also fuel for shipping.  There is nothing more wasteful than excessive packaging.  I notice it especially at the grocery store.  That's why I like to buy bulk.  There are some great co-ops where you can pretty much buy bulk everything from peanut butter to pasta.  Bring your own reusable container and then there is no packaging at all.
