I had my tongue in my cheek when I said "Who really wants to see a whale harpooned".
What was missing in whaling was a lack of willingness of the whaling nations to look at the big picture of ensuring that healthy populations were maintained - That is why the Anti Whaling movement was born and the moratorium was put in place and the reason why some people do not want to discuss the best way to recommence sustainable whaling.
Some times on some issues and whaling is one of those "unproductive moral fundamentalism" works for me. Bottom line is I believe that some animals should be on the leave alone list. I make my position quite clear on my website.

    Japan vote buying - DavidinTokyo

Apart from the famous quotes from Japan Fisheries head Maseyuku Komatsu which were later retracted by the ministry

("Japanese means are simply diplomatic communication and overseas development aid (ODAs). "So, in order to get appreciation of Japan's position, of course, that is natural we must resort to those two major tools. I think there is nothing wrong.") Not to forget Mr Komatsu's reference to minke whales as "cockroaches of the ocean"

I might believe that there were nothing underhand in some of Japan's aid program if these countries who had no prior interest in whaling did not then join the IWC and vote with Japan for the return of commercial whaling.

whaling and whale watching - TokyoTom

It is my personal belief that whale watching and commercial whaling can not exist side by side.

1 Who really wants to see a whale harpooned?

2 If full scale commercial whaling recommenced whale watching would become unviable due to a growing number of unhappy customers who returning to shore without sighting a whale.

Why do I say this? Because I believe that if full scale commercial whaling were allowed to return the same regard would be shown to sustainable catch limits as before when the IWC attempted to maintain world commercial whaling through quotas.

    Meat, Shame and Japan

I'm not a vegetarian but I don't eat shark fin soup, tiger penis or whale meat. Neither do I fool myself into thinking that I am human so therefore I am supreme. Dolphins for example communicate within social groups of 200 or more. Ah I forgot, humans train dolphins to be suicide bombers so that must make us more evolved than them! Just because whales are easy for humans to hunt and kill is no justification for doing it. To say that whales should be killed because they eat a lot of fish... look at our depleted fish stocks and who is responsible, look at shark finning, look at climate change, look at pollution, etc. etc. etc. The other creatures that share this planet with us have good cause to cite that arguement.
Getting back to the Economics of whales... Whales are great to watch and Iceland has a great whale watching tourism industry. In a recent internet poll 70% of Japanese were opposed to a return to commercial whaling... Maybe the Japanese Government should invest in whale watching rather than spending millions of dollars to pay for votes at the International Whaling Commission.

Good to hear that you have a conservationist hat. Would you like a T-shirt to go with it?
