McCain voted against renewable energy
McCain can say he favors renewable energy but he won't do anything to encourage it. He's against subsidies -- such as extending the tax credits for wind and solar -- believing the market will take care of it. And he opposes setting a standard for utility companies to switch over from fossil fuels. Obama is so much better on global warming issues it's ridiculous. I've outlined 10 reasons why on my blog.

Energy = oil
To Sarah Palin, energy equals oil. That's why she said Alaska supplies 20% of the nation's energy. (The number for Alaskan oil actually is 13%, but was 18% in 2005.) I guess she doesn't realize the world outside Alaska has wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, hydropower, etc. It's scary to hear her say "energy" will be one of her responsibilities as vice president. And that McCain says she knows more about energy than anyone else. Drill, baby, drill. Arrgh.

Oil shale worst part of bill
Allowing oil shale exploration in western states is even worse than expanding off-shore drilling. It's the filthiest way to get oil -- polluting land, air and water, causing more greenhouse gases and using up huge amounts of fresh water. Off-shore expansion, in this bill, may not make much difference because it doesn't share royalties with the states so they won't have an incentive to OK it.

Confusion about climate 'cooling'
Thanks for clearing this up. Whatever the temperature does over the next few years, carbon dioxide will continue to pour into the atmosphere, and 10 years from now will likely be at least 410 parts per million. We're at 385 now and last year the increase was 2.4 ppm. Assuming that rate (and it may well accelerate), we'll add close to 25 ppm in the next 10 years. That's dangerously close to the level assumed to be catastrophic. In fact some, like James Hansen of NASA, say we should get back down to 350.

Good for Obama
Hooray for Obama! High gas prices are good for the fight on global warming. People drive less and buy more efficient cars. Hybrid sales were up 38% last year while new car sales overall slumped 3%. In the battle of politics vs. planet, Obama reigns.
