GMOs
Whether Obama changes direction and allows real regulation of GMOs depends on how much he's wiling and able to de-corporporatize the federal government, including regulatory agencies. Looking at some of his cabinet appointments so far this doesn't seem to be a top priority. My hopes are high but my expectations are much, much lower. On Will the Obama administration be the first to seriously regulate genetically modified food? posted 11 months, 2 weeks ago 2 Responses

Intellectually dishonest comparission
I get so tired of GMO advocates putting forth the false premise that modern genetic modification is the same thing as Fr Mendel experimenting with his peas or the indigenous Americans developing maize from a wild grass. While it is technically true that both are genetic modification, it is also true that removing a wooden splinter from my thumb is surgery, but I wouldn't compare it to a neurosurgeon's art. It's misleading and intellectually dishonest and shows a deliberate attempt to obfuscate instead of having a fair and open debate on the merits or lack thereof.

Organic chemicals
Your list is a list of chemicals a farmer can use and still be certed organic. Obviously that doesn't mean that they're all used by all farmers or that some farmers use any at all. And on the whole, though I have nothing but common sense to back it up, most organic growers aren't dumping tons of these 'organic'chemicals on their crops the way conventional farmers do w/ the synthetic chemicals. On Organic produce reduces kids' exposure to pesticides, says study posted 1 year, 9 months ago 10 Responses

The Monsanto rats are almost as epidemic as their
seeds. To attempt to paint Percy Schmeiser as the bad guy in this battle is stooping pretty low, and equating transgenic contamination w/ sweet corn cross pollination is disingenuous at best. The bottom line w/ GMOs is that no one ever asked for them. NO ONE.And they have zero benefits to anyone except the patent holders. The so called advancements and superiority of GMOs has not proven true in real world conditions and serious questions remain to be answered re the health risks posed by consuming GMOs. One indisputable fact is that the AgBiotech Industry has never produced a study that shows there is no risk in the consumption of GMOs over the long or even short term. There is no question but there is environmental harm, and that alone should be enough to put the brakes on releasing this technology in the wild and allowing it blow with the winds. At the very least it should be restricted to the laboratories where extensive and exhaustive long term independent testing can be done. The Precautionary Principle exists for a reason.
