Best defense is good offense....
The smear campaign can easily be a distraction, but one wonders what environmentalists are being distracted from. Having tracked (w/ help from Gristmill) the handling of the toxic floodwaters in New Orleans, I've been wondering: what are environmental groups doing about possible bioremediation or other treatment of the toxic soup. How are they handling EPA, pipeline safety and other regulatory waivers?
Maybe this kind of smear will put a chilling effect on activists, but I sense that the major groups are already holding back from dealing with a situation -- a situation that calls for an impact analysis about the serious ecological implications of the Katrina response. It's time for activists to get on the offensive and figure out if FEMA/EPA are protecting the environment.

Should toxic gumbo be treated/filtered first?
thanks for the Reuters story link, though they'll still rather short on info.
I'll add it to my own post on the toxic impact of the hurricane.
If the flood waters are so toxic, why isn't Gristmill and enviro groups demanding a quick environmental check and options about whether they should filter/treat before pumping it back out?

Looting etc on Katrina
Dave, I hope you'll stay with the Katrina posts, even if it's grim. Here are my posts on Katrina, including looting, mostly from a Jewish ethics standpoint.
What can you tell us about Halliburton? sounds like some major looting underway
Would it make sense to push for pulling FEMA out of DHS? Who is a bigger problem, brown or Chertoff? Who is an easier fall-guy for them?

Good item
Dave,
We could strengthen their points, but it's good to know that business interests (sometimes) realize they are with us on this earth.
I cited your whole thing post, along w/other Katrina posts.
Take care,

katrina and global warming
I pointed out an example from the Jewish community, among others, of overblown efforts to draw too much of a connection. Maybe this isn't the best time to capitalize on tragedy...
